Islington Yoga
Islington Yoga was founded in 2000. We teach Shadow Yoga, a dynamic form of Hatha Yoga developed by Sundernath and Emma Balnaves. Introductory Courses are offered for beginners, providing a sound foundation for the yoga practice, as well as weekly classes, intensive courses, workshops and retreats for experienced students. Individual practice classes and courses are available for those wishing to cultivate and/or deepen their own practice.
Services
Beginners courses at Islington Yoga provide a sound foundation for the practice of yoga. The introductory movements are accessible for all levels of ability and for all ages. The teaching is progressive, however each student can develop at their own pace, working through the different levels of the prelude forms of Shadow Yoga and subsequent seated postures and yoga-asanas.
She began her study of yoga with Sundernath in 1993 and completed a 3 year teaching apprenticeship at the Yoga Shala in Sydney in 1997. She taught yoga in Sydney from 1997- 1999 and in 2000 she co-founded Islington Yoga when she moved to London. Karen teaches Shadow Yoga and Nrtta Sadhana at Islington Yoga and continues to learn under the guidance of Sundernath.
0-6 months yoga experience. Taught as 6 week courses to provide a foundation with the basic movements. Classes cover joint warm up sequences, basic stances for strength and flexibility, and coordination with the breath to develop mental focus. 6 months to 1 year of Shadow Yoga experience. These classes focus on learning the stances and developing the breathing rhythm of the first prelude, the Balakrama.

This is a very good yoga school with wise and experienced teachers.
I found it over six years ago and I have been coming to the classes since then. I would highly recommend this place to anyone willing to strengthen body and mind and to be guided by responsible people.

I started going to Islington Yoga about 15 years ago and wholeheartedly recommend. The teachers are very well trained and run excellent classes. The style of yoga taught--shadow yoga--mixes dynamism with attention to detail, aiming to increase energy while avoiding injury. The studio has natural light and is comfortable. Classes are a good size with no overcrowding. The atmosphere is friendly and spirited.
