But with the rise of upcycling and recycling, there is no need to throw away tired or broken old chairs and stools any longer. Porcupine Upholstery, based in Dunfermline, Fife at Fire Station Creative is here to help you rescue and restore your favourite old seat using the finest wools, linens velvets and leather.
Furniture from the early 20th century and further back was generally very sturdily made using traditional techniques. Many of these pieces survive intact, sometimes as inherited pieces or sometimes as a special piece that caught the eye at an auction. Porcupine makes it possible for these pieces to take on a new lease of life and last many more decades to come.

Services
Porcupine Upholstery offers a specialist upholstery service, working with both traditional and modern materials. Furniture made pre 1950 was made to last, with wooden frames using traditional jointing methods of dowel and glue and covered in the sturdiest of fabrics. Padding was horsehair.
Working with any piece made to these methods, proprietor Paula Graham can usually repair, clean and re-use the original materials or recreate the original effect.Every refurbished piece will meet all current Fire and Safety Regulations, and all fabrics used will have the best possible durability, as measured by the Martindale Rub Test.

I was given an armchair by my mother-in-law which is very comfy but had very dated fabric. I wanted to update the fabric and use it as a nursing chair with my newborn, with the aim that she can keep it when she is older. I found the process very easy, got lots of good advice and the work was done quickly. The finished chair is amazing - even my mother-in-law approves, despite misgivings about my decision to change her favourite chair! Very happy that I had the work done and would recommend this service :-)
