Podiatry is the term now being used when talking about foot care in the UK and is replacing the term chiropody. The change was made due to a variation in qualifications for a chiropodist. A podiatrist studies for a minimum of 3 years before qualifying with a BSc in Podiatric studies. From then onward they agree to a minimum of 35 hours of continual professional development every year.
Athlete's Foot is a fungal infection that affects the upper layer of the skin of the foot, especially when it is warm, moist, and irritated. The easiest way to think of an Athlete's Foot infection is to liken it to a gardener who is trying to germinate seeds. The fungus produces millions of spores, which will sit on the skin, in socks and stockings as well as your shoes.
Children develop a whole range of foot problems in the same way as adults can. For example, they can range from Athlete's Foot to Verrucae as well as structural conditions such as flat feet and Sever's Disease. From birth to walking, children's feet have to adapt from non-weightbearing to carrying their body weight and propelling them forwards at around 14 months of age.
Corns and Callouses are thick, hardened layers of hard skin on specific areas of the foot. Contrary to popular belief, corns do not have a root. Cracked Heels are the result of dry and thickened skin, sometimes with callouses around the edge of the heel. Sometimes cracked heels can be painful but nor always.
Diabetes can lead to a restricted blood supply to the feet resulting in cold, painful feet. It is the restricted supply of blood which can result in feet being slow to heal and can quickly become infected. Diabetes can lead to nerve damage in the feet and legs resulting in a loss of sensation. Any trauma or injury to the foot, for example a tight shoe causing a blister, may not be felt and could lead to more serious problems such as an ulcer.

A little apprehensive having been to another podiatrist locally who was useless.
Elizabeth was calm, friendly and professional and sorted the problem immediately. After a year I can now walk free of pain. Advice and follow up appointments made. Would highly recommend. More expensive than some others locally but you pay for the expertise and service. Worth every penny.

Thinking I had broken a toe and in some pain, I went to TFH for an appointment with Elizabeth. I received the most professional, calm and kind care and some excellent advice on how to give myself the best change of healing what was actually a fracture of my tarsal bone. I stuck rigorously to her advice and got a clean bill of health at my follow-up appointment. With my permission, they informed my GP and he called me the next day to see how I was. It was such a great experience, I wouldn't go anywhere else. Thank you TFH.
