The purpose of the type 1 Asbestos Survey is to locate the presence and extent of any ACMs (Asbestos Containing Materials) in the premises, where reasonably practical, whilst deferring the need for sampling and analysis until a later time. Its insulation, fire and chemical resistance made it ideal for use in the manufacture of a wide range of products from pipe insulation, flooring materials, cement roofing and insulatory coatings to toilet cisterns and artex wall coatings.It was during the post war period of the 1950s to the 1970s when asbestos use was the most prevalent: it provided a very economic, easy to use material that was welcome to the construction industry at that time.

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires all employers within the UK to provide a safe workplace for their employees. Any work with Asbestos is covered by its own set of regulations. Arrangements to deal with asbestos during refurbishment may also be required by the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994.
