Beck Isle Museum
We're excited to announce that the museum is now open Monday to Saturday until the end of October. We will also be open on bank holiday Sunday at the end of August. Tickets can be bought on the door but buying in advance makes entry quicker and easier for you and helps us to manage visitor numbers.

Step back in time and enjoy discovering Pickering's fascinating heritage. Immerse yourself in the past and imagine having a drink in the pub, a haircut in the barber's or queueing for sweets at the grocers. Watch our blacksmiths as they work in the forge (ring for times). Explore our agricultural and craft exhibitions before admiring images of Pickering Past by celebrated local photographer Sydney Smith (1884-1958).
Services
Come and discover the history of Pickering; its people, trade and local industries. Explore period shops, bygones of a Victorian age, including a printer's workshop, grocers' shop, gentleman's outfitters, pub and chemist's shop. Don't miss the blacksmith's forge and industrial heritage gallery detailing the fascinating past of the Rosedale ironstone mine and railway.
It will make a big difference in helping the museum team plan for reopening and developing ideas for the future if you could spare 5 minutes to share your thoughts. Come and see an exhibition of the black and white photographs transformed into colour for the first time! Go back in time with us to an era when washing clothes took a lot more effort than it does today!
Fashion in the 1920's reflected a new age of freedom for women coming out of the shadow of the First World War. The hemline began to rise, the silhouette became flatter and more boyish, accessories were fun and frivolous. Come with us on a journey through Queen Victoria's reign, told by the fashions of the decades.
We have been lucky enough to have Holly Smith working on our digital records at Beck Isle Museum, and we asked her to share her experiences with you. Holly is always full of cheer and enthusiasm, and is a pleasure to have around. A bright future awaits - now over to Holly! I'm currently working as a Documentation Assistant at Beck Isle Museum and Ryedale Folk Museum, after completing my master's in Archive Administration.
You may have walked past this print in our upstairs passage, and even stopped to admire the beautiful illustrations or to read the poem by Rudyard Kipling, but do you know the story behind it? The poem itself was perhaps Kipling's most popular work in his lifetime, but it was when Sir Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan light opera fame) set it to music that it really took off.

Like a Tardis, loads to look at and we'll maintained. A lovely lady and gentleman in charge and very helpful. Limited parking and better to book . Very reasonable price for a family of four. Great place if it's raining. Closed end of October till March/April.

This museum was far bigger and the content range and quality better than we ever expected in a twon the size of Pickering. The main them in rural life, but it covers every aspect from prison to pulpit, from cooking to carpentry, from childhood to old age and everything in between. You need two hours to do justice to the range of displays which cover a much larger area than expected.

Visited this lovely museum today. Had an amazing welcome when we arrived. We both needed the toilet after our train journey from Whitby. We were shown were to go and then led back to the start, so we didn't spoil the excitement ( we had to go past to the courtyard outside where a number of room sets were, to visit the toilets). After paying our admission fees which as concessions were 6.00 each, good value we thought. Everything was laid out well in room settings depicting different times in Pickering and various local businesses.
Absolutely loved it takes you back in time. So well worth the visit

Absolute gem of a museum in central Pickering. There is a lot more that you would expect looking back at and recreating Pickering and the surrounding areas history. If possible try and go on one of the days when they blacksmith is operating.

A great quite extensive museum full of artefacts reflecting all aspects of life in and around Pickering. The use of 'room' or 'shop' scenarios is good. Great for a rainy day plus.

We only live one hour away but never stopped in Pickering. Visited today and left wondering why we've never been before. Absolutely impressed with the museum. So much to see and find out about. Brilliant entry fee that doesn't break the bank.

Lots of interesting exhibits, and it's much bigger that you might expect. I like the way some of the rooms have been laid out as shops and a pub.
Worth a visit if you are in Pickering, and you can even come back again for free with 12 months.
