We currently have 22 volunteers aged from 20 to 80 years old, both male and female. Most volunteer in our Centre for 2 to 3 hours a week during our opening times of 11am to 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday, all year round. They meet and greet the public, scan and index our archives, update our website and social media, plan and create exhibitions, help with fundraising, give talks to school and community groups.
We are always looking for new friendly volunteers to come on board. Many thanks go to our volunteer, Colin Coupland, who worked from 2009 - 2014 building this website by reading and summarizing many newspaper articles.

History Box is a converted BT red phone box with historic pictures and an audio guide to the town's history. Open 24 hours a day 7 days a week, entrance free. Location opposite the harbour and Mutiny Bar. Disabled Access: We aim to be fully inclusive to all members of society but unfortunately our entrance doorway is narrow so a wide electric wheelchair or scooter would not fit through.
From York take the main A64 road to Scarborough. Continue into town until you see signs for the South Bay beach. Turn right and travel down the Valley Road until you arrive at the seafront. Turn left and travel along the seafront until you get to the traffic lights of the West Pier. Turn left and go up Eastborough for about 200 meters/yards until you see the Maritime Heritage Centre on your left at 45 Eastborough, YO11 1NH.
Due to the size of our premises, we can only accommodate groups of 12-15 at a time, but larger groups can be split into two and one group taken on a tour of the harbor and old town or art gallery whilst the others are in the Centre. Our volunteers are always happy to visit your group and deliver a presentation about Scarborough's amazing maritime history.

I think I was expecting a much larger place with exhibits and things and so was taken slightly aback to walk into a smallish shop.
However it soon became clear that the true treasures of the centre are the guys, the volunteers.
I used to live on an old firefighting boat in the early seventies and always wondered what had happened to her. Obviously thousands of vessels come through Scarborough and so the guys hadn't heard of her. I returned home slightly disappointed but was contacted a few days later with lots of information about the boat, including photos and I was very happy to hear that she
