According to recent archaeological research Cathedral House stands on the site of the Saxon market place. After the Cathedral was built (1080 -1200) the land was within the monastery precincts and part of the grounds surrounding The Chantry, and remained so until 1850, when the property was sold to Dr. Muriel.
I must first apologize for not writing sooner but somehow the time has totally gotten away from me since arriving home three weeks ago. I just wanted to thank you both for helping to make our stay in Ely so delightful and comfortable. Your hospitality and graciousness was simply wonderful, especially sharing drinks in your home as well as the garden.

I stayed with a group of friends in the self-catering Coach House. It is full of character, with an amazing collection of good books, pictures, antiques and historic artefacts. The garden is delightful. The location is superb; Ely is such an interesting city and the cathedral is spectacular. There are excellent restaurants, cafes, pubs and shops within easy walking distance. Jenny and Robin, the owners, are charming and helpful. All in all, a magical place to stay - and very English.
