The Axe & Compasses
We are pleased to now offer a contact-less ordering service as well as our popular takeaway option. The Axe and Compasses is set in the heart of the stunningly historic village, Braughing. The 16th century pub takes you back in time to the realms of traditional village life through its gallery of pictures, memoirs and antiques, with a very uplifting and contemporary twist.

Sourcing all its produce locally and preparing as many foods possible on their premises, it offers a fabulous service for all taste buds and dietary requirements. With their freshly baked breads - made daily, and hand-cut chips to their selection of homemade ice-creams, you can be sure that all dishes are prepared to their highest of quality offering a great selection of choice.
Services
I am the proprietor of the Axe & Compasses in Braughing and have been working in the catering industry for many years. Perhaps you share my belief that many years of mass production and distribution of foodstuffs has resulted in poor appreciation of the value of good locally grown produce, meat and dairy products.
Impromptu decision to pop out for a quick bite to eat and, not for the first time, we head to the Axe and Compass. Why do we always go back? Because they care, they care about the service, they care. Knowing that we would be in the area, I took the trouble to read reviews of the various places in and around Ware to eat and the Axe and Compasses kept cropping up with consistently good reviews, so we paid.
Braughing is a historic village and civil parish situated between the rivers Quin and Rib in East Hertfordshire. Braughing's history dates back to pre-Roman times with many artifacts and buildings that are very old indeed. One such building is the St Mary the Virgin church which dates back to medieval times and dominates the landscape of Braughing.

Served by I believe James, he was very friendly and very attentive.
I had the vegan pie which I highly recommended
My partner had the vegan meatless ball with couscous, again excellent. Finished with vegan apple pie and custard.

At last we have found a pub which serves a good range of vegan mains and deserts. The cheesecake was delicious. Will definitely be returning to sample the rest of the vegan options .

Nice local pub in a quiet spot, with outdoor seating at the rear of the property.
Menu / food was good and served to a high finish. Marked 4/5 stars as we went midweek (only 4-5 tables were occupied) but got the impression they were short staffed / stressed by the volume.

Situated in a picturesque village, there is a car park at the side. There is a good welcome, and the pub is clean, and comfortable. A good English menu with choice of small or larger plates of food, it was all well cooked. Nice selection of deserts. Service was very attentive, and we felt very comfortable. The ladies was very clean and well equipped. A traditional English pub worth a visit.
