Steve Mayer Opticians
We now have a Topcon Maestro OCT in the practice. This state of the art equipment is used to investigate the retina and optic nerve. It can be described as an MRI or CAT scan for the eye, allowing us to identify problems within the eye that could not be easily detected before. It is particularly useful to help identify early signs of glaucoma and age related macula degeneration, both of which are often treatable if identified early enough.

It is a simple test, which takes a few seconds to complete and it is not painful or uncomfortable. The cost of the test is not covered by the NHS, so we do have to make a charge to the patient for this. It is not a compulsory test, but we do recommend it for the majority of patients for peace of mind.
Services
Steve Mayer studied at Aston University in Birmingham, graduating in 1986 and qualifying in 1987. Between 1986 and 1992 he worked for the Co-op, Dollond & Aitchison and Boots Opticians before spending 5 1/2 years working for Christoffel Blinden Mission in Africa. For most of the time in Africa, Steve was based in Botswana, a land-locked country bordering South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Having an eye examination seems to worry many people, and the consulting room is an alien environment for most people. However, there is normally no need for concern, and we allow plenty of time for each appointment. We still use the old, familiar letter chart, but also have the high-tech equipment where this is beneficial.
Background The Government wishes to create a climate of openness and transparency around the NHS. To that end it is requiring all NHS contractors to divulge certain information about their dealing with the NHS, on request. It's a shame that the Government aren't quite so open and transparent in their dealings with the public.

The gentleman that owns this place is one of the nicest people you will meet, always happy to talk about his work and you get the feeling he genuinely loves his work.
The South African receptionist is also a real delight to talk to. A real kind hearted business overall.
