Broughton-in-Furness is a small market town in the South West Lake District. Its centre is a fine Georgian square where Annan House - the Square Cafe - is located, on the road to Coniston. Whilst within easy reach of major tourist centres, Broughton retains an unspoilt character and quiet charm of its own which delights visitors.
The roads are relatively quiet and the fells are much as they used to be many years ago. Broughton is a settlement which has kept its identity as a market town and retained its heart and soul. Here you will find members of the farming community and other locals going about their daily business, mixing with visitors who are given a warm welcome.

Pull off the main drag, avoid overpriced and characterless motorway services and eat in real Lakeland fashion in a beautiful and picturesque setting. My partner who is from the area brought me here to grab some lunch . The food was tip top for the price, service was cheerful and the roaring fire a welcome warming site. Accommodation available. Ideal for ramblers, cyclists or dog walkers, all set in a stunning Cumbrian village.

The staff at the square cafe managed to fit us in despite being really busy. Food and service are amazing and definitely would go back if i was in the area again. If i had to be really picky about the food...i really couldn't fault it 😉 Large portions of seriously scrummy food. If you are able to visit, you won't regret it!

Booking essential, choice of breakfasts light lunches etc. We chose a full english with an espresso both of which were delicious. The resident sheepdog waits patiently for any scraps. I did ask the owners permission to give the dog a bit of sausage and he gently took it from my hand. I'd recommend this place , we loved it

Woke up in a very dry Gosforth because we drank everything the night before, all I'm craving is hashbrowns, looking around and seeing nothing open! Nightmare! "Never fear" ! My friend yelled , " I know a place".on the bikes we hopped. The square care! Extra hashbrowns 50p and crispy to the gods ! We are saved.
What a great little place, waitress was lovely, food was a real decent price. The guys all had the full English which looks great value for money. I had beans on toast with 3 hashbrowns and tomatoes which was great ! The food took 30 minutes which we didn't mind at all but the waitress offered

The square cafe is an excellent place to grab a bit to eat or a drink whilst passing on your adventures. Set in the small Lake District town of Broughton-in-Furness with views over the town square.
There is outside seating, which is limited although you could always take your meal ‘to go’ and sit in the town square.
The inside seating area is small, cosy but homely, during the winter months a roaring wood fire often welcomes you. The cafe is pet and Walker friendly, so a great place to stop after a stroll on the local fells.
The cafe is a small business but has a big heart, rather than feeling

Great little spot for lunch. The lady who was serving was brilliant and the food most excellent. Pro tip 1: the outside seats are a right sun trap and it's cooler inside on a sunny day. Great for your tan, though! Pro tip 2: during the Covid thing, call them first and make a reservation. I didn't, but they were kind enough to take pity on a salty, sweaty, cyclist, but I can't recommend that everyone does that!
