Dr Jenner's House
Born in 1749, Edward Jenner spent much of his childhood exploring the fields and hedgerows surrounding the Gloucestershire town of Berkeley. After training as a surgeon with the great John Hunter in London, 23-year-old Jenner returned to Berkeley with a renewed enthusiasm to uncover the secrets of the natural world.

Edward Jenner's early experiments included medicine, horticulture and the natural world. He achieved his Fellowship of the Royal Society for a paper on the nesting habits of cuckoos. Then, in 1796, he carried out the world's first controlled vaccination against smallpox. Soon after he established a free vaccination clinic in the Temple of Vaccinia, a rustic hut in his peaceful garden.
Services
In 2019 and 2020 we carried out a comprehensive review of our work, based on significant research and stakeholder engagement. As a result of this we have created a new Forward Plan to guide our work, through the bicentenary of Jenner's death in 2023, to the fortieth anniversary of Dr Jenner's House opening to the public in 2025.
Volunteering at Dr Jenner's House is a really rewarding and enjoyable way to support our charitable work sharing the story of Edward Jenner's ongoing life and legacy. We have over thirty volunteers working with us to care for The Chantry and welcome visitors and groups. Our Welcome Volunteers are the friendly face of Dr Jenner's House.
We are delighted to welcome you back to Dr Jenner's House. All tickets must be booked in advance and we have put a range of measures in place to keep you and our team safe. The whole family can explore the life of Georgian scientist Edward Jenner at his former home in the historic market town of Berkeley.

Learning about Edward Jenner in school, I was always intrigued to find out more about him. I was so happy visiting his home and learning more about the smallpox vaccine pioneer! The garden is lovely too, it's delightful to see how medical treatment has changed over the years!
Staff inside the house/museum was really lovely too. We pre-booked our tickets for 16:00 but arrived 30mins early, it was no problem to enter the house early.
I highly recommend visiting this place!

Just attended one of their tours of old Berkeley walks. Owen tells a good story, highly recommended especially if you are interested in the quirky side of ye olde Berkeley.

So. This is advertised as Dr Jenner's House. It is in the grounds of Berkeley Castle. The cost to get into the castle is £12.00. You then have to try and find the entrance to the house to find the cost is an… additional £7.00. You then find out that It is not actually his house but a house on the site where his house was. Very disappointed.

A fascinating museum, where we spent several hours, learning about the efforts of this country GP and accordingly, given less credibility than the "London Set", but who nevertheless found a vaccine for small pox which opened the way for vaccination generally as a means of preventing disease. A day well spent if you have any interest in medical advancements.

The name of Dr. Edward Jenner is world-renowned. On my recent visit to Australia, during May, his date of birth was referred to in a newspaper I was reading! The house is full of personal memorabilia of this amazing man; handwritten letters, notes and photographs of Dr Jenner's life and associates. Spent more than 2 hours there. So much to see - inside and outside. very worthwhile visit and whose name I now will never forget.

Travelled miles to see it. It was closed and volunteers onsite less than helpful. We were told it might have to close permanently and with a reception like ours I fully understand why..
