Thornbury & District Museum
The museum has no paid professional staff but is run entirely by scores of volunteers from the local community. That doesn't mean we're not professional though! We work hard to maintain high standards and this has been recognised by Arts Council England who give us Accredited status - the same status as the big national players.
Services
We're just a small museum and don't have room for a caf but there are plenty of pubs and cafs and restaurants nearby. Our friendly volunteers can advise you. There are no public toilets in the museum itself but toilets in the Armstrong Hall complex next to the museum are available for public use, as part of the Thornbury Community Toilet Scheme.
Our museum is a former cottage, with fairly small rooms, so access isn't as easy everywhere as we would like. There is level access at the front entrance into our Reception area and Bookshop and into the hall and the room telling the story of the Thornbury Roman Coin Hoard.

There is a downstairs computer which gives access to rolling slide shows of the history of Thornbury and district, as well as to our sister website, Thornbury Roots, where you can explore local and family history.Downstairs, there are Browsing Files containing information on many aspects of Thornbury history.
The core of the museum at that time was a collection amassed by local Oldbury resident Mary Bruton, pictured here at the age of 20. She had a passion for collecting items of local historical interest. Since then, the collection has expanded, thanks to the interest and generosity of our local community.
We like to think the relationship between the museum and the local community is a two-way one. It's great when you come in with information, share what you know, maybe show us your local historical photos. Some people have worked on exhibitions with us. Many, many people contribute time, friendship and ideas.
Our collection includes objects, documents, photographs and digital images, which all help to tell the story of Thornbury and the surrounding villages. Some of the collection is in store here in the museum. Items from the store are used for exhibitions and can also be accessed, by arrangement, for research.

Best museum in Thornbury! Small but very active with changing themed exhibitions. Run entirely by volunteers who do a great job. Drop in and look around.

Interesting town museum with lovely locals running it. Very sweet activity for the kids...if you can find all the mice in the museum you get to take a hand knitted 🐁 home. Our girls loved it (9 and 14 years old).

Extremely helpful couple of ladies as we entered - recently lost my dad in February and didn't know much about his dad and his family going back generations and it took us to the area. The main woman behind the desk was very helpful in pointing out some useful socicitys and people that might be able to help :)

Well worth the visit. It may be small, but it's packed full of information. I particularly liked the list of local slang words and their meanings.

Interesting little museum about the history of Thornburg, with very friendly and knowledgeable curators. Only small but requires about an hour to read/look at things. Finding hidden object activities were available for the kids which they really enjoyed. Free to enter but there is a donations box.

A small museum run entirely by volunteers. Displays include the Romans coins found in the area and other signs of Roman life in the area. There are also changing displays on various aspects of local life and history. Do ask the volunteers for more information they love to help.
