American Museum Within Claverton Manor
The American Museum takes you on a journey through a period of American history primarily focused on 14th - 20thcenturies. With its remarkable collection of folk, decorative arts and cultural objects, the Museum shows the diverse and complex nature of American traditions. The only museum of Americana outside of the United States, it was founded to bring American history and cultures to the people of Britain and Europe.

Each year, special temporary exhibitions are on display in our Exhibition Gallery, and throughout the year there are a range of exciting events planned, including traditional American music concerts, kids' activities, and Living History events.
Services
There are a number of ways to visit the Museum & Gardens - by car, coach, rail, taxi, bicycle, bus and on foot. Please note: Cleveland Bridge is currently closed to traffic, which will impact anyone travelling to us from London Road. Visitors, coach drivers, delivery drivers and contractors are advised to use alternative routes.
Relax and absorb views across the gardens and Limpley Stoke valley, whilst enjoying delicious lunches, hot dogs, sweet treats, and seasonal food made in our kitchens. A range of vegetarian and vegan food is available. We bake our bread on site, and wherever possible we cook with produce grown in our gardens.
If you need something that little-bit-different, we have great news! American Museum & Gardens has partnered with Art UK to provide a print-on-demand service for a selection of our artworks. Every purchase you make helps to support the work that we do at the Museum, ensuring that our buildings, collections, and grounds remain open to the public.
Taking inspiration from nature and the landscape, we've created a magical space where children can engage with the natural world and American culture, with play experts the Green Play Project. The Children's Garden is a place for families of all ages to spend time together. You don't need to pre-book to visit but we may need to temporarily limit numbers, from time to time.
We welcome group visits to the American Museum & Gardens with discounted admission available for groups of 15 people or more. Groups have the option of choosing between our full admission ticket or our gardens only admission ticket. The full admission ticket allows entry to the entire site including the Main Collection (located in the Manor House), Exhibitions, Gardens, Caf and Gift Shop.

Went to the Illuminated garden event. We just missed the rain, but it was very slippery underfoot. The organisers had set up a route to walk around the garden, through a variety of scenarios set up from distant trees floodlit with colour to computerised installations during beams into the night. Varied and entertaining it was, I particularly enjoyed the parrafin torches in the Italianate garden. There was a sound installation too, which added to the atmosphere, playing low key, vaguely yuletide-oriented muzak at a reasonably low volume - the system was unobtrusive but capable and delivered a quality

We visited the light show here as part of our family trip to Bath and was thoroughly impressed with what the organisers had put on. There was ample on site parking with attendants to guide the way. The onsite café offered a good range of delicious food. The walk itself (while muddy so take your wellies) was wonderful with an amazing array of colourful displays. All of the outside areas were zoned really well and offered something unique and different. It was a lovely walk which was enjoyed by everyone. All the staff we met were friendly, helpful and not at all phased by the drizzle and coldness

A lovely Christmas lights trail - very innovative, exploiting so well the existing gardens and topography.

This was a surprisingly excellent museum, with lots to see and investigate. I was with 48 eleven and twelve year old pupils and they cared for us very well. Who would have thought quilts could be so fascinating?!! Some of the artifacts are incredible.

What a special place to visit for all the family. Even with the weather being so unpredictable, there are plenty of spaces to escape the rain. (If you want to of course) and the views are breath taking.
The staff were all lovely, professional and it was obvious that they love their job and, like us all, want to enjoy the day ahead.
The grounds are magical and easy to access by those a little less mobile and use a pushchair.
I highly recommend this museum, we are looking forward to our next visit at Christmas time.
Don't miss your chance to explore X

Lovely gardens, expensive but interesting exhibition, pricey but nice enough cafe. Lots of building noise. Would go again as gardens and views lovely, but make sure your bank account isn't in the red and hopefully avoid building noise!

Didn't visit the house, but the gardens were lovely- mostly what I'd call "naturalistic" planting, apart from a recreation of George Washington's formal garden. Very relaxing and peaceful. The staff in the cafe were friendly too.

I had no idea what to expect when we arrived here... I wouldn't say I'm an ardent fan, or seeker of American history... But it was a fantastic day out and really interesting! The views and gardens are fantastic... Really breathtaking when you first arrive. The gardens are well laid out and beautifully kept... But we'd have loved to have seen more (or some!) Labels around some of the wonderful plants.
Inside, we had a warm greeting and some of the rooms had staff on-hand to talk you through any details you cared to ask about. Mrs Cronky was particularly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her

Beautiful gardens and play areas for the children. Was a great art exhibition in the grounds which made it even better. The museum is very interesting but probably a bit too much information for a child under 6.

An amazing place, wonderful gardens, fantastic museum and exhibition and such a beautiful place to take in the wonderful views. Staff are really helpful, friendly and kind. The cafe is great and the gift shops have lovely items that you wouldn't find anywhere else in Bath. A really unique special place, you won't be disappointed you'll be glad you went. Xx

We came to visit today, got to the car park to say you’re full and to wait by the “overflow” Car park. Which we did, to then to be greeted by a sarcastic & rude man to say you’ve now reach capacity and to come back later. Ruined Mother’s Day, complete waste. Especially since we phoned ahead to book to be told, no need to book and you can just turn up!
Shocking

I’m afraid I cannot recommend this place, as of December 2020. We met a friend here yesterday, to see the exhibition of 1930s fashion and photography.
When we got there, we found that only the exhibition hall was open and not the manor, with its reconstructed period rooms, which we were very keen to see.
We were not warned of this as we went in. It… was on the website, but we didn’t discover this until later on. The gardens were open, but there was obviously very little to see at this time of year.
The exhibition itself wasn’t anything spectacular, and was distinctly lacking

This is our 2nd trip since the children’s garden opened (and since many other fantastic additions to the gardens). It is so peaceful and the gardens and views are beautiful. The children love roaming and making… the most of the new area for them. The eldest enjoyed the exhibition. We still haven’t made it inside the main house yet but hopefully next time.
In addition we found the museums rock and re-hid it.
