The heart of the present day Collection was formed by Sir Thomas William Holburne (1793-1874). As a second son, Thomas William (generally known as William) first pursued a naval career. He ultimately inherited the Baronetcy in 1820 following the death of his elder brother, Francis, at the Battle of Bayonne in 1814.
We are a ten minute walk from the centre of town along Great Pulteney Street, one of the most beautiful Georgian streets in the country. We are a 15 minute stroll from Bath Spa Train Station (0.8miles), through the historical city of Bath and down Great Pulteney Street towards Sydney Gardens. We have a very small pay & display car park for Museum visitors and a number of free disabled parking spaces for Blue Badge holders.
Filled with natural light, the caf opens onto the historic Sydney Gardens and is the perfect spot in which to relax after a day at the museum. Seasonal, fresh food is the focus of the Garden Caf and our range of light meals, quiches and soups have all the ingredients for a delicious lunch. Enjoy a cup of Benugo coffee or loose leaf tea with a cake or one of our freshly baked scones.
The Holburne is happy to recommend the following hotels as a place to stay when visiting Bath. Not only are they great places to stay, we are also delighted to thank them for the support that they give to the Museum by providing accommodation for our many visiting artists, curators, art handlers, speakers and musicians.
Discover activity drawers throughout the extension galleries. Spot the fake objects and guess what others are made from; children of all ages love exploring the activity drawers, with magnifying glasses to help where needed. Get creative in the Sackler Discovery Centre with fun, free activities inspired by our current exhibitions.

"The Holburne Museum is committed to opening up the enjoyment of art to people of all ages and from every walk of life. The Holburne was founded in 1882 with the gift of Sir William Holburne’s collection of 16th and 17th century Italian and Dutch paintings, silver, sculpture, furniture, porcelain and diverse objets d’art. That founding gift has since been added to with a collection of 18th century paintings by such artists as Gainsborough, Lawrence, Ramsay, Stubbs and Zoffany. Set within the historic Sydney Pleasure Gardens the Holburne's programme of exhibitions, commissions and events sets

Not a bad fulfillment of my walk down the long street. The Op Art exhibit is going on right now and it's sort of cool but small for the price I paid. But I got the package that included cafe food so that softened the blow of the cost a bit.
The rest of the gallery has a few gems but I'm a little overwhelmed with the ostentatious framing.

My 5 year old son and I had a really horrible experience at the Holburne museum today.
My son and I were on the first floor in the large exhibition space admiring the white paper style fabric installation when he tried to use the computer there which is for public use. This was when an older lady with a shoulder length grey bob who presumably was a volunteer ran towards him, grabbed his arm and dragged him away and telling him severely off. To be honest I was in a state of shock and so was my son.
