El Coto in Durham is now closed; thank you to all of our regular customers for supporting us over the last 9 years, we hope to welcome you to El Coto Newcastle in the future. We can accommodate large parties and also have a first floor restaurant available for private functions. Our extensive menu has a wide range of hot and cold tapas, salads, cured meats and of course "paellas"; a traditional Spanish rice dish.
We also offer a range of tapas selection menus, great for large groups and for the indecisive diners who find it too hard to choose from our large range of dishes! The dark wood floors and wooden ceiling beams combined with a simple, rustic dcor offer a cosy and informal setting suited to both a quick bite to eat or a special occasion.

Services
We can accommodate large parties and also have a first floor restaurant available for private functions. To enable us to accommodate guests at a range of different times during the evening, please note that at weekends we normally operate sitting times. We usually offer guests their table for 2 hours for bookings before 8pm.
Tapas are small portions of food and the idea is to share as few or as many dishes as you fancy. Our tapas are portions of dishes typically found in the gastronomy of Southern Spain and all of our dishes are home-cooked using both ingredients sourced from Spain and locally bought produce. Our extensive menu has a wide range of hot and cold tapas, salads, cured meats and of course "paellas"; a traditional Spanish rice dish.

We got one of the set menus. There was four of us and I don't usaly like tapas because I go home hungry!! But I was very pleasantly surprised. They brought out the cold tapas first and then the warm dishes. Food was amazing and I went home with a full tummy and content having a lovely birthday meal.

As the promotion says- authentic tapas some of our party hadn't long returned from a Spanish holiday and felt that El Coto was the genuine article. Small and cosy; reasonably priced; likely to be more food than you can eat. We used a combination of set menus and this worked well. Went during Uni hols- I believe it can get quite busy in term time.

Had the set tapas menu for 3, which was 15 quid each (this was at dinner). There was more than enough food for three people and we were all stuffed by the end. There were about ten small plates with the set menu. What I can remember:
chorizo in white wine sauce
chicken in a creamy tomato sauce
green olives and bread with garlic mayo
cheese and ham plate
whitefish croquettes
beef stew
chili prawns
pork loin in creamy mushroom sauce
bacon-wrapped dates
The plates seemed to be hit and miss. Some were really great (the bacon-wrapped dates), some werent (they didnt cook out all the alcohol from the
