Services
The business of G.E. Hartley & Son was established in 1808 in the village of Thorner, Leeds 14. Then under the name of A&B Harrison it was listed as cabinet and chair makers, but soon started to carry out funerals as people came to them for coffin making. The Hartley family had always worked for the Harrison's prior to taking the business over some four generations ago.
All our attention is concentrated on satisfying the needs of our friends and neighbours. We are not distracted or bound by corporate rules handed down from head office and shareholders. We are flexible and responsive to your needs. This is our business. Our neighbourhood is your neighbourhood and we take personal pride in serving you well.
If the death occurs in hospital, the hospital staff will contact the person named by the deceased as next of kin. This may be, but need not be, a relative. The hospital will advise whether it is possible for a doctor to issue the medical certificate, and when this will be available for collection. If a doctor who has treated the deceased is unable to issue a death certificate the death will be reported to HM Coroner for that district.
All deaths must be registered in the area where it occurred, although it is possible to give the information in another area. The process of registering a death involves a short interview with a Registrar in a Registrars Office. Consultations with registrars are by appointment only and you must produce the relevant information and documents to register a death.
When the death certificate has been issued by the Registrar, you will also be given a certificate authorising the funeral. The choice of a firm of funeral directors is important as you should feel comfortable and confident with them. We are members of The Society of Allied Independent Funeral Directors and abide by guidelines and regulations.
