Kicks Martial Arts Centre
Chris Kent has been teaching in Brighton since 1975. He became known in Sussex for quality instruction in both Wado Ryu Style Karate and Full Contact Kickboxing. As with most martial arts clubs, teaching for Chris started in a range of church halls and leisure centres. As the groups of children and adults being taught expanded, it became necessary to open a full time dojo.

In 1982 the Lewes Road dojo was opened and has continued there ever since. Chris is still teaching Karate and Kickboxing at the Lewes Road dojo. Chris Kent and Tiffany Williams manage Kicks Martial Arts and the team of qualified instructors who run clubs in Peacehaven, Newhaven, Eastbourne and London.

Wado-Ryu Karate is a Japanese martial art founded by Hironori Ohtsuka Sensei in 1934. Ohtsuka Sensei developed Wado-Ryu after studying the Samurai martial art of Jiu-jitsu, and Shotokan (another style of Karate). This combination, according to Ohstuka Sensei, is a softer, more natural means of self-protection.
Kickboxing originated in the mid-seventies in America under the guidance of the PKA (Professional Karate Association). It was initiated as a result of the frustration felt by many martial artists with the Karate Tournament Circuit. Initially known as Full Contact Karate with most of the original champions coming from a Karate background; Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, Joe Lewes, Benny "The Jet" Ugiduez it increasingly came to be known as kickboxing.
For those who are new to Jiu - Jitsu this traditional Martial Art was used by the Samurai Warriors in feudal Japan and is considered to be the Grand-father of Karate, Aikido and Judo. Jiu - Jitsu is made up of a series of different throws, joint locks, strikes and break falls. Techniques learned from Jiu - Jitsu can work to your advantage whatever the situation, strength, size and of sex of your opponent.
Ju-Jitsu is the oldest documented form of Japanese martial art. The word 'Ju' means gentle, supple or yield, while 'Jitsu' means art or skill; thus 'Ju-jitsu' is known as the gentle skill or art of yielding. If it is new to you, it is not unlike judo. It is a system of throws, locks, blocks, strikes and kicks.
Aikido is an intricate, intriguing and effective martial art, the name literally translating as the "Way of Harmony." It was founded by Morihei Ueshiba, one of the most inspirational and legendary figures in the long history of the martial arts and has the resolution of conflict rather than the destruction of an opponent as its objective.

The best place to train under an umbrella of martial arts in. It's my favourite place to be and run by the best, nicest , professional instructors. Kicks and the owners/instructors deserve much more than 5* :)

Being relatively new to exercise (yeah i know, dont judge!) and thai boxing I was a bit unsure how it would work but pleasantly surprised at how organised and safe everything was. Great instruction, friendly team, all social distancing adhered too and a whole lot of fun. Highly recommend if you're looking to get fit and learn something new.

I have spent about 5 years training in Taekwon Do over in Hove. I have constantly been bugging flatmates and friends to come train in the martial ways, usually to limited response.

Thankfully, I finally saw some light at the end of the tunnel with a flatmate who had trained in a little amateur boxing. Now he was wanting something a little more akin to his fighting background, so we decided to go try out a session at kicks. Rather than my usual school hall venue, kicks boasts a proper ring and is a permanent feature of Lewis road. This is especially relevant if you choose to train in kick boxing
