Longmead Vets have been serving the local community in the Shaftesbury area for over sixty years. Our aim is to provide our clients with a caring, personal service and provide the highest standards of veterinary care. We treat all domestic pets. The practice is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons accredited small animal practice which means we are regularly inspected to ensure quality of care.
The Shaftesbury and Wincanton surgeries have full hospitalisation and surgical facilities with separate dog and cat wards. We offer a 24 hour on-site emergency service 365 days a year at both surgeries. We have the equipment and expertise to provide services that you will not find at every veterinary practice.

Services
The surgery uses the 'Canigen' range of vaccines manufactured by Virbac. The routine vaccination of puppies and adult dogs protects them from Parvovirus, Distemper, Infectious Hepatitis and Leptospirosis. In rural north Dorset, dogs are most at risk from Parvovirus and Leptospirosis. One type of Leptospirosis can be shed by rats.
Castration of the male dog has numerous advantages for the animal and the owner. It reduces the likelihood of the dog wandering in search of companionship and it can help with some forms of aggression. Dogs can detect the pheromones released by a bitch in oestrus at distances in excess of a mile and can become agitated if they are unable to answer the call.
Only veterinary surgeons are allowed to dispense prescription only medicines. The flea and worm treatments sold by the surgery are prescription only products. This is much more than a simple legal classification. Treatments that are only available on prescription have to undergo rigorous testing for effectiveness and safety.
Each year 1 in 3 pets is injured or becomes ill* and needs urgent veterinary treatment. Insurance can help you cover the cost of these unexpected bills leaving you free to concentrate on helping an important member of your family recover. Longmead Vets recommend having your pet insured and are accredited as an Appointed Representative of Vetsure Pet Insurance.
Dogs that are presented for routine surgery such as neutering should be fit and healthy. Every animal is examined prior to the administration of an anaesthetic but if you feel your dog is acting abnormally in any respect please tell us when it is admitted. It is important that dogs have an empty stomach when they are anaesthetised.
