Cockermouth Golf Club is situated 3 miles east of Cockermouth. You are surrounded by excellent views including Skiddaw, the Lorton Fells, Scotland and even, weather permitting, the Isle of Man. He won The Open Championship five times. He was also a renowned golf course architect. Braid set the standard in golf course design that the rest of the world would follow.
The Club-house is in the position to enjoy a beautiful view over the valley to the Lorton Fells. The usual facilities are incorporated in the Club-house. Snacks are available most days and full catering is provided on open days and for visiting parties of more than 10 persons. During the week, there are regular tee bookings on Wednesday 09.30am to 11.00am, and 4.30pm to 6.00pm, and on Thursday from 8.30am to 09.30am.
A Moncaster shown as DQd as he filled in for a professional but is not allowed to enter a pro score, shot a 67. Possibly not everyone's cup of tea but we loved it. The 2nd hole plays over a fenced field with gates to get back onto the fairway. The 3rd plays up a steep hill. Then you play across the top of the hill for a few holes. The 10th plays over an old quarry and the 16th plays over a field and drystone walls. The fence round the course is just there to keep the sheep and cattle out and there are stiles dotted around so you can get into the fields to play any wayward shots. The staff were very friendly and we had a good chat to the groundsman who told us he has worked there over 40 years. He does a
