As captain of a golf club in Sheffield, I got course courtesy. First impressions on entering the professionals shop was that of a welcoming club, Mr Fergusson the pro, was very helpful, and his assistant talked us through the course prior to teeing off. The shop was well stocked with latest equipment and a wide range of clothing to suit all pockets.
The Club was established at the Kingholm in 1880 by a group of businessmen who leased the land and employed a Mr Fergusson to lay out the original 9 holes. The links were used by more than one golf club, amongst others Queen of the South.
As a result of this the committee decided to lease ground at Summerhill and an amicable arrangement was reached with the owner Mr J W Whitelaw for renting 36 acres of land at 110 per year to provide a nine hole course which was laid out by Willie Fernie. In 1895 a 6 hole golf course was condescendingly provided for the women and juniors between the present first fairway and the wall of nearby Jessiefield Prison.

I enjoyed the golf course.. thankfully there was no children around to ruin the fun of me and my colleagues. We had a nice warm soup before we went to the course and when we arrived we were welcomed by the manager known as ''Mr Smith'' and he showed us around n' such. Overall had a very good day out and would recommend to any other gentlemen wanting a break.
