A surprising little cafe hidden underneath a health food shop!
All of the food is organic and vegetarian; they specify between vegan and vegetarian options. On a given day they don't have a lot of variety, but their menu changes from day to day; so no two days would be alike! They tend to offer 2 main dishes, 2 soup options, 1-2 salad options and a dessert. They also have a decent breakfast menu, a full coffee bar, and a dessert/to-go station filled with different cakes and tarts. The portions are generous, and the food is delicious! I had a vegetable gratin, which was predominantly potato

TL;DR - Great independent store and cafe.

The 8th Day is a place of two halves. On the ground floor is the shop - it's got a bit of everything, but with an organic-healthy-vegetarian vibe. You'll find lots of vegetables and pulses here, lots of foods for people who want to avoid certain food groups (think gluten, dairy etc) but also a whole host of other produce like vitamins, beauty products and homewares. It's not all cheap, but there's a lot here you'd struggle to find elsewhere.

My particular favourites are their wine section - lots of organic and sulphite free varieties

Friendly staff serve good portions of veg stews and bakes. I wasn't in the the mood for a stew so got a soup that was PHENOMENAL. Hearty mushroom with a kick of spice and brown bread and butter to round it out. The vegan desserts were varied, from cake slices to brownies to flapjacks. I opted for a peanut butter and chocolate bar and it was just lovely. The prices are also quite fair and you can pay with card.

I thought I would give The 8th Day one more try last week as I needed somewhere to eat quite quickly.

If anything it was worse than previous visits.

Despite the fact that when I got there they were due to be open for another 3 hours, a large number of the menu items were not available as they had sold out. Those that were left were very "samey" with the dhal and stew looking remarkably similar. The dhal itself was quite nice but the portion size was tiny. More like a side dish than a main course. A large salad (at separate cost) was needed to make it into an OK meal. Surprisingly the

Always a reliable place for vegan options. Decently priced and fast service. A nice apple cake that was a few days old but was still delicious (probably should of got the brownie) they have a large tea selection that you can have with a dairy free milk.

I have been to the shop upstairs a few times, and each time I find it amazing that there are so many products in such a tiny space. They are very likely to have the (organic) thing you need. They also sell a lot of bakery products, and I literally fell in love with their bread, which is very continental-style, so you might not like it if you are fond of soft bread.

Only last week I tried they cafe downstairs for breakfast. They have a good selection of coffee, which can be bought also in beans. As for food, I went for the vegan sausages on toast, definitely more out of curiosity than of veganism

Before you say it, I'm not a Vegetarian who this place is aimed at, but I'm gluten free and I've heard they have a good gluten free range here after a chat on Wilmslow Artisan Market with The Foodamentalists, who have a store there and this place is one of their stockists.

This place does have an interesting layout, having a café downstairs which has lift access too at the back of the store, but in all the store in a way doesn't seem really modern, it has old, small trolleys at the front which are so small it has no use being there to be honest.

The layout of the store is

Absolutely amazing. Situated beneath a health food co-op, 8th Day Food Cooperative, On the 8th Day is a vegetarian restaurant officially, but has mostly all vegan options, from daal to the black bean sweet potato enchilada, which I had and it was out of this world. I hear that everything else is just as good. The seating is a bit like in a cafeteria, but is fine. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, and made my experience even better than if it had just been the amazing food. There is also a good selection of beverages and desserts (there are vegan and raw desserts mixed in). It is also

There is something strange about 8th Day, the cafe staff are lovely but the shop staff always seem grumpy or non-helpful. I was here last week for some gluten free biscuits (not for me) and failed to see them at first, although they did not have enough, I asked when they might be restocked and all I got was a shrug.

On the other hand if you head downstairs the cafe staff always seem well mannered and polite, so I guess I will be continue to return for delicious food and smoothies but might just shop for things elsewhere (a Chorlton well know coop). There are of course the normal oddities that

The food here is pretty good plus some of it is vegan and/or gluten free. For any vegans or vegetarians out there, this is the place to be if you're around the university area. I buy some of my organic foods here or soy milk (lactose intolerant) when I need to get a quick drink before heading of to class.

Literally MY favourite place in MCR. Here you can find all natural products you're dreaming of: upstairs is a shop with raw, gluten free , or meat free meals. Everyday , you can try products and everyone is just so kind and helpful. You won't feel judged if you have leather shoes, if you know what I mean. Downstairs is a lovely cafe with different choices everyday and for quite a good value : you get a FULL plate , you won't feel hungry after it ! Everything is very fresh and tasteful : a proof that it doesn't has to be posh to be good quality . Some people stay to work, families

I'm glad this place exists although its not somewhere I'll shop regularly as I'm too much of a cheapskate and meat eater to need most of their stuff. I'm glad they're trying to save the planet and animals though, someone should.

I was at the cafe earlier this evening and very much enjoyed my jambalaya with tofu and veg. The nice woman behind the counter offered to let us try a little taste of their 3 mains they had left as we were dithering over what to get. My friend has issues with eating wheat and pulses so she also checked in their book what all the ingredients were

Jonny Q has spinach and feta parcel for breakfast! Yes you heard it here first but I basically was wandering past the other day, thought I hadn't been here for a while so popped in and thought why not do something new on my Thursday morning - that's when I thought this would be a great idea - and it basically was!

My wife is quite the fan of proper nutritional food (I do too but I'm quite partial to some junk on the side) and we used to pop by 8th Day quite a bit. Basically it's only the odd occasion we find ourselves on Oxford road now and from here it was nice to pop in relive

And now, I review the shop above the Eighth Day's café. Would you believe it, it's just as lovely as what's downstairs! So I amble in, snot-ridden and unsexy. I'm seeking out healthy bits and bobs to make me feel better, and I'm curious about ingredients used on my current most favouritest of blogs: http://www.thegluttonousvegan.com Seeking dairy-free whip and soyonnaise, I know I've come to the right place.

But I got so much more. The staff obviously also realised I found additional items to those I'd originally come in for, because after a while I started

Eighth Day encompasses the ethical ethos of the ideal world: "trading without exploitation of our employees, our customers, the planet and ourselves, cruelty-free and fairly traded, wherever possible. Sustainability and environment friendly is of course on the agenda. So with this vegetarian and vegan healthfood shop comes all the extra benefits too, peace of mind that no cows, sheep or bees came to harm in the making, the planet can be saved!

I admire it's charm and its cause a lot. I sure hell try but fail miserably to be a good citizen. The establishment itself does a whole lot of

Housed in the basement of the wholefoods co-op, the 8th day cafe is open from early morning til early evening. As you'd expect, the emphasis is on healthy and wholesome vegetarian, organic and macrobiotic food. There's homemade soups, fresh salads and about half a dozen different hot meals available every day.

Unlike the co-op upstairs, the staff in the cafe are usually warm and friendly and don't seem to mind how long customers stay nursing a soy latte or baked potato. There's usually mellow music playing and and students wandering in and out for some cheap chow. The only

If I'm honest this place is way way too healthy for me...the shame. However they do sell a great selection of fairtrade products here (which I am always in favour of) and a great cup of coffee!

This place is great for veggies and is ideally located just near man met to save all those malnourished students who have been living on a liquid diet.

I will say that the smoothies here area greeeat hangover cure if you can stomach one. Looking over this review maybe I need to reassess my lifestyle :$

OK so from the outside it looks like one of those places where teenagers go to get free condoms but inside it offers really good food, served by really nice people. And when I say nice I don't just mean people who serve you in a courteous manner- although they do that too- I mean full on, saving the earth one cafe at a time type of nice.
The Eighth Day is a vegetarian food serving, fair-trading, environmentally friendly, democratically run super cafe that probably sleeps annoyingly soundly at night!
Buying a coffee here will guarantee you become a better person.
