Freewheelin Cycles
We sell cycles and accessories and have a large range of products in our popular city store. We stock bikes for all styles of riding - road, hybrid and mountain. We have a large selection of childrens's bikes too. We're cyclists too, and are part of the Edinburgh cycling community. Our business is built on trust and a friendly and helpful approach.

We love talking bikes, so pop in for a chat and we'll advise you on the the best cycle and accessories for your needs and your pocket. Whether it's a cycling helmet, tyre or bike frame we have an extremely large range of accessories to kit you out and get you on the road. If you need professional advice on any of our products we are only too pleased to help you.
Services
We have been in business since 1980 and are extremely passionate about all things cycling. Cycling is also a great way to get through the town, stay fit, and have fun with your children. We are proud to be known as a traditional bike shop and we get to know our customers on first name terms. In fact some of our customers got their first bikes as children from Freewheelin, and now we're taking care of bicycles for their kids.
We're delighted to be a participating dealer in the government-backed Cyclescheme programme. Cyclescheme allows you to spread the cost of buying a new bicycle and safety equipment like lights and a helmet, and also gives you tax relief on your purchase. The costs is spread over time and taken at-source from your paypacket, and can save you a considerable amount of money - an average of 32% of the cost of a new bike.
We have road bikes suitable for club riders, hybrid bikes ideal for town and country and mountain bikes for those who love the challenge of the forests and hills. Cycling is a great way for children to develop confidence, and it ensures time spent away from games and tv screens so is great for health.
Whatever the circumstances we'll do our very best to get your beloved machine back to health. Whether from accident or mechanical failure we have the knowledge and the skills to do the job, regardless of the age and specification of your bicycle. If your bike is beyond economic repair we'll be honest with you, but we'll do our level best to keep your wheels turning.

Quick and effective help with finding a new seat post for a bike. Helpful on the phone prior to visiting and friendly chat in store. I'll be back for other bike parts in the future!

This is the best bike shop in Edinburgh for service! Nothings is to much trouble. I have often sent people here and they have been so thankful for the excellent personal service a small business provides. I travel past many bike shops in order to use their service and have done for many years.

The owner is always very helpful. He will do all he can to help, even when I came just for advice. He has changed my tire/tube in 10 min on the spot, and offered several options to fit my budget. I also saw him help a child chose a helmet a few months ago while I was waiting, and he was kind and patient - I strongly recommend his wee shop. Thank you for your help!

Great service. Had a much needed service on my bike, so took it in on a Saturday. They replaced the cassette, chain, and other parts. I was expecting to be without a bike for a few days but it was ready for pickup in a couple of hours! My bike now feels like new after having it for 7 years. Reccomended.

Dropped in this afternoon as sons bike had front brake which had become disconnected. They couldn’t have been more helpful. 2 minutes in and fixed. Happy boy and Dad. Can’t recommend enough and will use for any future purchases and repairs. First Class.

Chris has helped me and my wife out with our bikes on several occasions, most recently at short notice when my bike was damaged from an incident. He's a nice guy, a true professional, and always fair and honest, I don't understand some of the negative reviews here.

Having read some of the nonsense reviews about this place (re. cost and attitude) I felt I should post a positive.
The owners extremely reasonable with his prices. Yes you might a fiver/tenner more than Amazon for a part but that's not the point! You are paying for his years of experience and knowledge! Nobody goes into Tesco and barters with the checkout woman over the price of bread! I have bought two bikes from here, both great value and if there is any wee adjustments/questions the owner is always happy to help.
He also tries to impart his knowledge on upkeep/maintenance so that it doesn

Chris has taken my bike in (very last minute) on two occasions over the last ten days, firstly to quickly fix the gear set and send me on my way without charge (I was anxious about setting it wrong). I then thought I had a flat. He was supposed to close shop but still took the bike in, checked both tires for punctures and found nothing, pumped them up and again only took a small fee. This guy is an honest, hard working and reliable show owner who looks after his customers. I used to go elsewhere but Chris has my business now.

Highly recommend Freewheelin Cycles though I don't live in Edinburgh I am always happy to travel a little further for a quality professional service. My time trial bike was creaking but a short time in Chris's capable hands the only thing that creaks is my knees! Love my new cassette and my gears work perfectly.
When I went to collect my bike he was busy with an elderly couple repairing their wheelchair so not only a cycle shop helping the key workers get to work, cyclists in general but providing a brilliant service for the whole community. Thank you for my latest repair drive train so quiet

The owner is a really good person, he does his job the best he can, and I think he has done it for over 30 years, so he knows well. He is honest from the first moment and true to his morals, he will repair anything and tell you the price, which I think is very good, but if he sees something in the bike that cannot be repaired and can cost your life he wouldn't repair it, which is fair and understandable.
I would recommend it to anyone!

Chris was extremely helpful when I stopped in one day mid-cycle after having some issues with my rear derailleur. He took a look and indexed them pretty quickly, free of charge. Later that week I phoned to book the bike in for a service (as it was due one) and Chris was able to fit me in quickly before the shop closed for a holiday. Service was timely, done to a good standard and good value (compared to other services I've had in Edinburgh). All done with friendly service (didn't even laugh when it came out that my rear derailleur had issues because I had fallen from a standing still position while

Super friendly and quick help. Despite having heavy workload they took some minutes to fix my bike's issue. You've definitely won yourself a future customer, once Corona is over I'll be back to request some non-urgent modifications and help and I'll happily recommend this shop to my friends and family.

I cannot recommend this shop enough. I had a problem with my chain on the way to work. I called the big shops - cycle republic and evans and they couldn't take me for weeks (and no guarantees they would still be open with coronavirus).
Instead, I pushed my bike to Freewheelin. The owner was amazing: sorted my chain immediately, taught me how to take care of it myself and barely charged me anything. I recommend everyone support this local business with any of your cycling needs!!

Avoid! Took my bike there for a simple brake adjustment. £40 later brake still not fixed told me would need to spend about £90 on a new brake.

Took it to another shop, they striped and cleaned it and charged me £25. All sorted now. Also inquired how much a new brake would have cost, they informed me £16 and not the £90 I was previously told.

I love cycling and Edinburgh is one of the best cities in Europe to do so. Their are cycle routes within the city such as along the Water of Leith as well as the routes into the country as well.
Freewheelin' is a bicycle and accessory shop located on Slateford Road and the owner has over 30 years of experience, so you know you are buying a bike from a reliable person when you come here!
The shop stocks bikes to cater for everyone's needs right from an infants first bike all the way to racing bikes for professionals. There are also lots of accessories such as helmets, bells, mud guards
