The word Osteopathy is derived from two Greek words meaning bone and dysfunction. Founded by Dr A T Still DO (1828-1917) of the United States in the middle of the 19th century and expanded in the UK by Dr Martin Littlejohn. Dr Andrew Taylor Still chose the name Osteopathy to highlight how the structure of the skeleton is vital in correct function of the body's systems, and that misalignment of bones can cause dysfunction.
Whether you're an enthusiastic amateur or an elite professional, an osteopath can help with the prevention and treatment of common sporting injuries. Sports injuries are often problems that arise when increased demand is applied to a body part that is not functioning properly in the first place. These might include spinal or pelvic misalignment, muscle imbalance and poor posture.
We aim to help you get back to do the sporting activities you enjoy by improving joint mobility and reduce adhesions and soft-tissue restrictions so that ease of movement is restored and performance enhanced.

After we've corrected your injury, we can design a rehabilitation programme to reduce the risk of the injury reoccurring, including advice on appropriate fitness workouts, stretching, warming up and cooling doen, Nutrition, Osteopathy is very much suited to assist sports people who require the treatment of complex and recurrent injuries.
During treatment, you may be covered by a towel. It may be helpful to wear or bring loose clothing, which you can normally leave on. Sometimes it may be necessary for you to uncover relevant parts of your body to be examined, or for example to facilitate treatment with oil. However, this can normally be avoided if you are uncomfortable about it, and should the need arise you may arrange for a chaperone to be present.
Osteopaths are trained to deal with trauma and often see victims of trauma especially the type of cases that solicitors often deal with in terms of personal injury. The osteopathic approach is geared towards the mechanics of the human body. As practitioners we have particular skills in taking a thorough and extensive medical history, we use our highly developed sense of touch to identify points of weakness.
