In accordance with NHS guidelines, we are still able to make face-to face appointments for Urgent or Essential Eye Care during the second lockdown. Please call 0800 980 3464 for further information and to make an appointment. We are an independent family-owned group of opticians, now with a third generation family member on the team.
We have four practices in Essex and one in London's Docklands. For over fifty years we have been providing family eye care and a wide range of optical services, catering for all sections of the community.

Services
Now with five branches, Belson & Sons was founded by Leonard P. Belson in 1955 when he established the Docklands practice in London's East End after leaving the Royal Army Medical Corps. He went on to become one of the UK's leading practitioners, especially in the emerging field of contact lenses. He carried out research with some of the pioneering contact lens laboratories of the day, much of which was published in the professional journals.
For most people, a visit to the opticians begins with an appointment to see one of the optometrists for what is often called a "Sight Test". However, at Belson & Sons we prefer the term "Standard Eye Examination". We provide a sympathetic service to small children (including infants - we are happy to see children at any age), the elderly and those with special educational needs.
Q: What is the difference between a Dispensing Optician, an Optician, and an Optometrist?. A Dispensing Optician (D.O.) is a qualified Professional who specialises in ensuring that the glasses you choose are appropriate for your prescription, correct for the job or hobbies you want to use them for, and (rather importantly) that they suit you and look good.
What glasses you're using or have used previously - if you wear glasses please bring them with you, along with any copy of the prescription from your previous eye test. This is the core of our clinical services, and we take great pride in the skill and experience of our highly qualified optometrists, who will carry out some or all of the following.
Because of the further tests, extra time is allowed for your appointment, and you should expect it to take at least 45 minutes overall. There is a reduced fee for this comprehensive service compared to having all the extra tests charged individually.
We may recommend this service if you need a very thorough investigation of particular problems with your eyes, or you can simply opt for this service if you would like the most advanced and comprehensive eye examination possible. We open our eye tests to young children in the areas of London, Grays, Corringham, Pitsea and Witham.

Can't thank the team enough. After an eye injury I was fit in last minute where the team quickly and effectively identified the issue with my eye and organised an appointment with the hospital for me. A caring team, cannot thank them enough and cannot recommend enough. A pleasure to deal with and even called to check up on me how I got on after. Ethan you're a diamond!

Have been coming here for a number of years ( optician is great) but have to say Ethanβs sales speech and pricing very much depends on the individual is blatantly obvious. Have you seated down, how wonderful you look as you try on some glasses, almost as far as putting one under pressure I would say. I was charged 5X the cost had I gone somewhere else on one visit. This was not a one off. Clearly the man is money hungry. I walked in once for one replacement lenses. The reception dealt with me alone. I could clearly see she was uncomfortable to discuss pricing and needed to call Ethan and both

I was recommended to Belson & Sons by a friend although not my local optician. What a fantastically run family business where everybody was very friendly and nothing was too much. From arriving, to having my eyes tested, to the help in choosing new glasses was great. Not only that I ended up going for a slightly cheaper frame because Ethan the son was great and helped me decide which ones suited me better. Friendly and honest family business and all round great experience. Now have a customer for life, highly recommend this practice

Poor experience overall!
The son of Belson (Ethan) lacked any professionalism and due care diligence towards his customer.
The very first moment I stepped into the Burdett road practice. The customer service assistant shouted out in front of a customer whether I was working? I replied, yes I'm working from home! (Covid protocols etc.) to which she replied "no", "I meant are you working or on benefits?"... Bizarre and awkward/rude (I should have realized from that point how the customer service was going to go on from then!)
Anyway, to the point, to why I'm giving this place a very GENEROUS 1

Fantastic customer service. Staff are always happy to help with any problem big or small. They have a great range of glasses and they spend a great deal of time finding the best frame for you. Opticians are experienced and knowledgeable and also spend time detailing what they recommend for your own individual needs. Coming here for years, couldn't recommend them more.
