The first Bar 44 was founded by two brothers, Tom and Owen Morgan, in 2002. Having fallen in love with Spanish food, drink and culture throughout their formative years, they wanted to bring their favourite tapas dishes and a slice of modern Spanish culture to the UK. Over the course of the last 16 years, the Bar 44 Group has grown organically into one of the leading Spanish hospitality companies in Britain.
Based in South Wales and the West Country, there are now four Bar 44 outlets, in Cowbridge, Penarth, Cardiff and Bristol. Each bar offers different food and drink menus in order to showcase the huge variety of quality Spanish produce available.

Services
The newest member of our family of tapas bars "Bar 44 Bristol" officially opened its doors in summer 2018. Situated in an old bank on Regent Street, Clifton village, the building has been lovingly and inspirationally refurbished bringing a fun and sophisticated restaurant space. Our great friend, Spanish artist Andi Rivas, has once again produced some stunning works of art detailing the passion and quality which will be on offer in Bar 44.
The success and recognition of the first two Bar 44s led to the opening of Bar 44 Cardiff in 2015. The largest of all the Bars can be found in the shadow of the Principality Stadium on Westgate Street. A former canal warehouse, the Bar is split up into four separate subterranean rooms with arched brick ceilings which serve to enhance the buzzing atmosphere which is central to all great tapas bars.
Sadly, Bar 44 Cowbridge is closed until further notice due to social distancing restrictions. The original Bar 44 opened its doors in 2002 in the small market town of Cowbridge. Situated on the first floor overlooking the High Street, the Bar has evolved over time and become a firm fixture for those seeking superb tapas, an enviable drink offering and knowledgeable service in a relaxed environment.
The second Bar 44 was opened in 2012. Based in the heart of the cosmopolitan seaside town of Penarth, the Bar quickly established itself and has become synonymous with consistently good 'Tapas Y Copas'. The Bar boasts an open kitchen which adds real theatre to any visit here. Guests can sit up at the kitchen counter and chat to our team of chefs whilst enjoying a dish or two, very much like the most popular tapas bars in Spain.
All of our dishes are cooked and prepared fresh to order and therefore come out of the kitchen as and when they are ready. If you would like all your dishes together, please advise the team when you place your order. Chardonnay, Macabeo, Parellada: 48 months of pristine ageing producing classic brioche notes.

Small portions but good food quality, cosy and good environment.
Reason why I am only giving 3 starts is that I saw a waitress touching the food with the hand when collecting from the kitchen ( I assume to know if it was hot or not), I found this not acceptable and specially in the middle of a pandemic.
Probably will not be coming back.

Visited here in October 2021z
My favourite cocktail place in Bristol - couldn’t recommend visiting here more. It was just a stop as we explored but super glad we popped in.
All the staff were so welcoming and informative (and super friendly) - we sat at the bar and learnt more about the inspiration behind some of the cocktails and recipes.
Would love to go back when they have new menus - I was eyeing up the Sunday roast as people ordered which looked mouthwatering and filling! We had a couple of the bar snacks - croquettes and cheese and were very much pleased with our choices alongside the

I had an hour or two to kill whilst waiting for my wife at the Nuffield round the corner and what better place than a tapas bar!
I had a 0% beer (which still had that same weird taste when they launched in the 90's, which was disappointing) and some olives. Later we had the Padron peppers, crispy Hake, patatas bravas and a chicken dish. All were excellent.
A very pleasant time indeed.

Definitely my new favourite place in Bristol!!! Second visit tonight with friends. Delicious food (the chirizo melts in the mouth), stunning cocktails and sexy decor.
But, most importantly are the staff… all of them are a credit to the (handsome ) manager. They’re friendly, professional and fun. Special mention to our server Daisy… she’s BRILLIANT, and so much fun!
Can’t wait to go back!!!

Great restaurant and service! I couldn’t reserve a table online for Sunday but went by the restaurant at 14:00 and the front of house (host) was very kind to arrange us a table, good man. Sunday menu is different and the roast takes the spotlight however we were unable to ask for it, fortunately as it’s wasn’t my intention. The tapas menu for Sunday were varied and on point for what’s expecting, mostly Andalusian dishes, the classic. We selected an assortment, drinks and came all fast and nicely cooked. The waiting staff was kind, polite and helpful. The space, atmosphere and layout of

Bar 44 is another one of those places that seems to be trying to do absolutely everything at once. Not content with being a coffee shop, it wants to be a cocktail bar and a tapas lounge too. In principle it's fine but I just can't seem to shake the feeling that it's just trying a bit hard to appease absolutely everyone and be all things to all patrons.
The cocktails are really great so it would make sense to pick one thing and focus on it rather than trying to be the jack of all trades but master of none. The classics start at a fiver and you can upgrade the alcohol to a premium
