David Austen Optometrists
The practice was founded in 1931 by Ralph Ingram, with the aim of providing a complete ophthalmic service instead of just the provision of spectacles. Ralph was always interested in innovation, and imported the first custom-made ophthalmic chair into the UK from the United States.

He was joined in 1974 by David Austen and the practice continued to grow, regularly investing in the latest equipment and creating the practice that is David Austen Optometry today.Patient care is our first priority and from computer controlled visual field units to our electronic test charts and laser scanning ophthalmoscope, our patient journey is supported by up-to-date equipment and well trained staff.

We believe that ensuring your eyes are in the best condition they can be is extremely important and therefore we conduct extended eye examinations which include a variety of imaging tests so that we can see more of your eye. We also provide specialist appointments for patients with conditions such as Dry Eye.
Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an advanced eye health check for people of all ages. Similar to ultrasound, OCT uses light rather than sound waves to illustrate the different layers that make up the front and back of your eye. A digital photograph and three dimensional cross sectional scan of the back of your eyes helps explain any unusual conditions found.
DAYTONA OPTOMAP is an ultra-wide digital retinal scan that captures more than 80% of your retina in one quick flash, whereas more traditional methods typically only reveal 10-12% of your retina at any one time. This enhances your Optometrist's ability to detect even the earliest signs of disease. It is generally recommended that you have an Optomap every time you have an eye examination.
DRY EYE ASSESSMENTS are dedicated to the examination and treatment of Dry Eye. Symptoms of Dry Eye include redness, sensitivity to light, burning or grittiness. It can be caused by an insufficient quantity of tears, a reduction in the quality of tears or a combination of both. Recent research has shown the quality of tears to be the most common factor.

Excellent treatment, picked up problems for me that other optometrists missed. Could not recommend more highly.

When my husband went for his appointment I mentioned a problem with my eye which was checked straight the way by the optician and was told I needed it to be checked at hospital which was arranged by the receptionist. I was told this quick reaction saved my eyesight and I cannot praise the staff of David Austen enough. They are always very caring and helpful, nothing too much trouble for them and would recommend their services. A big thank you from Mary and Joe Mckenzie.

I have been a patient of this practice for over 40 years firstly with the late David Austen and currently his son Matthew. The treatment I have received during this period has been exemplary. The care of my eye health has been undertaken with a thoroughness and level of competence which is second to none. All the staff in the practice go out of their way to make me feel a valued customer and when I have been in an emergency situation or just concerned over an issue with my eyes their response is immediate and reassuring until the issue is resolved. I have no hesitation in recommending this practice

Prohibitively expensive. No outside prescriptions so if you want any glasses you’re already paying £59 for their ‘basic’ eye test on top of expensive frames and lenses. Not sure how a place like this still exists. Try elsewhere and buy the same frames for half the price.
