The first nine holes of the new Sutton-in-Ashfield Golf Club as it was initially titled, were laid out on some of the highest and most exposed land in the county, by Mr Tunbridge, the professional at Mansfield. The ground was leased from the Duke of Portland. The Duke's agreement to lease the land for the use of the new golf club included one firm stipulation: No-one was allowed to play the game before 1pm on a Sunday afternoon.
Towards the end of the 1920s, the question of extending the golf course into an 18-hole lay-out became ever more pressing. It was something the members wanted and, if the club was to take a significant position on the Notts golfing circuit, it was a necessity. The answer came from Mr Arthur Farnsworth, who owned Stonehills Farm, situated near the railway line at Sutton Junction.
With the advent of the 1930s, the story of Coxmoor was preparing for another important chapter. While other courses have tinkered with various holes over the years, moving tees, re-shaping greens, adding and removing bunkers, Coxmoor has undergone a number of major re-designs to arrive at the nurse we know today.
Coxmoor can claim a unique record, certainly for this part of the world, of being the scene of two air crashes - one which ended in tragedy, the other in miraculous escape. On a foggy morning in 1941, a Blenheim bomber came roaring over the course, the pilot almost certainly disorientated by the poor visibility.

Had a most enjoyable round here. A beautiful setting with a clubhouse in an elevated setting with great views of the fairways fanning out between the Scots Pines. Rolling countryside, interesting terrain, good long par 5s. Greens consistent, a bit slow when we were there, not sure if this was representative of the norm. Definitely aiming to return next year.

Played it in a open competition last week. A 90min each way drive for me but well worth it. Great facilities, friendly people and a very well presented course. Greens were fast and true and still holding a well struck approach. Great test!

Unfortunately the club is run by a committee of clowns who will go out their way to ensure the club does not move forward. The course itself 'was' great until the club decided to remove thousands of trees, it now looks like every other average golf course. At weekends when you finally get on the tee, you'll have a 5 hour round and then sit in the clubhouse listening to members moaning about the club. Most of the members are miserable, especially the mens and ladies senior section who seem to be in an historic time warp. Anyway, I've gladly left the club and now enjoy my golf at a forward thinking

One of the best courses I have ever played in the UK. Great test of golf, every hole is different. Staff are welcoming and friendly, the club house is stunning and the food is superb. If I stayed nearby I would be a member here hands down. Look forward to visiting again.
