The Montessori philosophy of "freedom within a prepared environment" allows each child to develop initiative, confidence and independence. We provide an excellent staff/child ratio of 1:4. This enables us to offer a childcentred environment where children are free to choose from a range of activities. Our Nursery occupies the ground floor in four adjoining spacious and light rooms with a large private and secure garden with pet rabbits running free!
Services
We provide two years of pre-school nursery education, Foundation Years One and the pre-school year. Children come to us after their second birthday and leave to join the Reception class at school as a 'rising five'. We offer morning, afternoon or all day sessions; 38 weeks a year. We endeavour to provide a staff/child ratio of 1:4 for the whole of the time your child is at Nursery.
We aim to make learning fun and to help children develop concentration, a love of learning and purposeful activity. All this is achieved in a very relaxed manner, where children are not hurried from one activity to another but allowed to take their time. The Montessori philosophy of "freedom within a prepared environment" allows each child to develop initiative, confidence and independence.
When young children go outside they are generally loud and active! They shout, roar and hoot. They run, jump, swing, climb. They are driven to do these things because their bodies tell them that there is a need to be active and a need to take in as much oxygen as possible to fuel the activity (hence the gasping and roaring!).
A nursery group consisting of children with ages ranging from 2 years 0 months to 4 years and 11 months is not typical of a nursery - but of a family. This natural grouping of children follows a pattern of early family life and offers many benefits to the children - older and younger. Older siblings are role models for the younger members of the family and their influence is profound.
Diane Berry is a Montessori nursery teacher trained at St. Nicholas Montessori Centre in London. She has worked with preschool children in developing countries in both the voluntary and private sectors. Her experiences living and working in developing countries led her to the conclusion that children flourished best when they were in an environment that made them feel safe and secure; the child's own home.
