Services
We are a small nursery based in the stable block of an18th century family house, with access to a large, child friendly, walled garden. Long after they leave us, the children will have wonderful memories of the secret pathways, the tree house, the enormous sandpit, picking apples and pears in the autumn, feeding the guinea pigs, quail and chickens and collecting their eggs, the games and water play on the lawn and, maybe, even the flowers!
In the depths of winter we still like to go on regular walks in the countryside, but inevitably, we spend more time indoors. So how did we spend our time in January and February of this year? The theme for the first two weeks was 'Winter'. I was concerned that the children would not have experienced real snow, but I needn't have worried, as it came at just the right time.
For much of the year, a large part of every day is spent outside. The garden at Elswick House has been designed with children in mind. With hidden paths, secret dens and lots of bushes to hide behind, it is a small childs paradise. There is a large lawned area for running and an enormous sand pit, with a wide paved surround, ideal for sand castles, the whole edged with scented, but indestructable, lavender bushes and shrubs.
Elswick House is a very busy Nursery. There are always a number of activities going on. The Sparrows Room has a permanent sand pit and the lid is frequently used for playdough and foam. Sometimes it is used as a water trough. Painting, cutting, sticking and a wide range of craft materials, from glorious glitter to regal peacock feathers, are employed to produce the wonderful wall displays, not to mention the pictures to take home.
Every summer for the last 30 years or more, we have run our Summer Activities programme throughout the school summer holiday period. Every year the 6-week programme changes, though we keep a few of the old favourites like the Elswick House Bake Off, The Gruffalo Hunt and Pirates Day. Each day the theme changes and members of staff organise interesting and exciting activities around that topic.
