Here at Killowen our children are introduced to the world of communication as soon as they enter Nursery school. They are given opportunities to develop their language through play, their pre-writing skills through mark making with chalk, paint, water and their reading through having access to a wide range of books and stories read to them.
In Killowen Primary School we see Numeracy as a key skill within school and a life skill to be utilised throughout every child's 'real-life' experience. Numeracy means not only knowing about about number and number operations but also developing problem-solving skills, gathering, comparing and interpreting information as well as exploring shape, space and measures.
In Killowen we teach our pupils ICT skills, but more importantly our pupils use ICT across the curriculum to further their learning. We have a fantastic ICT suite which houses thirty computers, forming a school wide network incorporating computers and iPads in each classroom. We have a permanent green screen in our school which pupils can use to create exciting videos, and a range of programmable devices such as Blue Bots and Sphero.
Children are naturally curious and often ask profound questions about themselves and The World Around Us. In Killowen, we provide enquiry based opportunities for the children to use their senses in order to excel in their powers of observation, to be able to sort and classify, explore, predict, experiment, plan, carry out and review their work.
