Acoustic shock can occur at work after exposure to loud noise, and can lead to irreparable hearing damage such as a perforated eardrum or tinnitus. An acoustic trauma is often a work-related injury caused by poor quality audio equipment, and call centre workers are affected the most. Injury occurs because of issues such cheap headsets with no noise limiting features, or as the result of equipment malfunction.
Acoustic shock can cause permanent hearing loss, increased and painful sensitivity to noise and tinnitus. If you work in a call centre you are advised to check that your employer has put into place adequate protection devices to prevent acoustic trauma incidences from occurring. If your hearing has been damaged because your employer failed to protect you from harm, you are entitled to claim compensation.
