Taraloka
Taraloka is a women's Buddhist retreat centre, founded in 1985 and set in beautiful Welsh Borders countryside. We are part of the Triratna Buddhist Community. Taraloka offers a breadth and depth of Buddhist and meditation retreats for all levels of experience. This is the fifth installement of a series on the stories behind the shrines around Taraloka, and the women whose generosity, care and love have made Tara's realm what it is.
Services
When you book a residential retreat at Taraloka you pay a booking fee. This covers basic costs such as food, water and electricity, and lets us know that you're committed to coming. This is the only charge made for coming on retreat. As far as possible, we try to run on the Buddhist principle of generosity, or dana in Sanskrit.
ONLINE EVENTS: You can book a place on our online events via the event on the website. Most of our online events are by donation with no booking fee to pay. If you are unable to register online please contact the office to book admin@taraloka.org.uk or 01948 710 646. RESIDENTIAL RETREATS: To book a place on a retreat, you need to pay a non-refundable booking fee 60 for a weekend/long weekend, 80 for 4-7 nights and 90 for longer retreats.
All retreats are residential. Bedrooms are shared, with two to four people in a room. There are toilets and showers located throughout the retreat centre, so wherever you are sleeping you are never far away from one. Please let us know at the time of booking if you have mobility issues which mean you need ground floor accommodation.
Taraloka runs on the Buddhist principle of generosity, or dana in Sanskrit. Taraloka only exists because of a flow of generosity from so many individual women, each giving in their own way. Those who teach and lead retreats here are not paid, but do it out of generosity and for the love of it. Taraloka relies on hosts of volunteers - women who give their time and energy to cook, garden, clean, do maintenance, or organise on retreats.
Taraloka's resident community consists of around ten women, living and working here in the white house. While each of us has our own path and history, it's fair to say that we are all here out of a deep desire to contribute to this project, and to live and practise as part of a Buddhist spiritual community.

I have been to Taraloka for a Vimalakirti Nirdesa retreat, which was great. Maitridevi's creative magic-like story telling was very inspiring. Nowadays I am following the Youtube videos, however once the pandemic ends, I am hoping to be back for another retreat. 💞🙏🏻

A deep, nourishing retreat with great support if needed, wonderful countryside and knowledgeable confident facilitation of dharma learning. Wish it was nearer so more retreats would be possible!

Ultimately, Taraloka was the catalyst to my life completing changing for the better. A decade later and I am still a frequent visitor. I cannot fault the retreats, which teach meditation practice and are all led by inspiring, pioneering women. Whole-heartedly recommend.

I've not visited in person yet but I've just signed up for my second online retreat. Taraloka retreats are a beautiful place to pause and reflect for a moment in this crazy world. I certainly intend to sign up for a "real" retreat when things get back to normal. In the meantime I will continue to enjoy your online offerings. Thank you and keep up the good work.
