Dyslexia is a specific type of learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling. It is sometimes known as 'a specific learning or language difficulty (SpLD)'. Dyslexia can affect different people in different ways and its effects range from mild to severe.
Assessment is often the first step to understanding the obstacles that are getting in the way of progress and unlocking talent and self-belief. If you have any concerns or would simply like to discuss the options available to you, you may find our free 20 minute advice sessions useful.
Dyslexia assessments are not 'tests' that give a yes/no answer; they are focused on understanding each person as an individual and on finding a positive way forward. All of our assessments are followed up by practical advice, usually in a written report. This is the most comprehensive kind of assessment, focusing on dyslexia and the other specific learning difficulties which often co-occur with dyslexia.

People with dyslexia often have problems with reading and spelling. However, some adults with dyslexia are fluent readers but their dyslexia may show in their writing, short-term memory, organisational skills, maths abilities and the speed and way that they process information.

My son has been attending Dyslexia West Midlands for just over 4 years now and they have worked absolute miracles with him . He was 8 years old when he started and he couldn't even read the cat sat on the mat without sounding it all out and he could barely write his name but now with the help of excellent tuition he is reading diary of wimpy kid books they are his absolute favourite and he is writing short assignments for school. As a parent it is just such a joy to see him enjoying reading and going to school he no longer gets frustrated when he can't do something he works his way through. I can

Ethan likes his tutor Shannon. She is friendly and approachable as is Suzanne.
At the end of the lesson, feedback is given on work he has done, how he has found it and what I can do at home with him. Ethan is more confident when writing and his spelling and reading have improved.
As a parent if there is any aspect of work that I find Ethan struggling with I can raise my concerns with Suzanne who then requests his tutor to look at with him.
I am really pleased with the help they give him.

I only called to get more information because my daughter (year 4) really struggles with spelling. Suzanne asked a number of very precise questions and suggested to do a vision test. Now my daughter has glasses and seems much more confident. We will see how that might affect her spelling but I would never have known that she might be struggling with her vision. Thank you so much! I am beyond grateful.

I booked a dyslexia test earlier this year and was in a rush to meet my universities deadline for the reasonable adjustments plan. Dyslexia west midlands was able to book me in for a test the following week whilst also offering a student discount. They were very considerate about the time pressure due to my deadline and I received my report much quicker than estimated. The test was carried out professionally and in a comfortable environment. I highly recommend if you are considering getting a dyslexia test.

I contacted Dyslexia West Midlands to arrange an assessment for my 11 year old. They were extremely helpful and very accommodating to our tight time-frame. Suzanne was amazing. She put my daughter at ease though out the assessment and she was very clear and detailed in answering my queries, and in suggesting ways of working and tools to help my daughter’s learning.

Our son had been struggling academically, socially and emotionally at school. The team have been so patient with him and employed many different strategies to enable him learn at his own level. They understand that he struggles to concentrate so they incorporate movement breaks and change activities to enable him to continue with the session. They do regular assessments and inform us of his progress and next steps in his learning. Suzanne came in to do an observation on him at school and provided a detailed report to the school, suggesting many strategies the school could try to enable him to access
