The Fry Art Gallery
The Fry Public Art Gallery was opened in 1987 and houses an impressive number of paintings, prints, illustrations, wallpapers and decorative designs by artists of the 20th century and the present day who have local connections and have made a significant contribution to their field.

There is an emphasis on those who for a variety of reasons settled in Great Bardfield between the early thirties of the last century and the death in 1983 of John Aldridge RA who had lived in the village for fifty years. The Gallery is run by volunteers, both invigilators when it is open to the public and other helpers throughout the year.

Open from the 1st Sunday in April, a lovely gallery specialising in artists who have lived and worked in North Essex including Ravillious and Bawden. The attendants are very helpful and knowledgeable. The gallery is small, but perfectly formed!

Delightful small gallery focusing on local artisits from 1930, including Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden, Michael Rohenstein and John Aldridge. The lighting could be better as it refelcts on most of the artworks.

A very special gallery. Wonderful changing exhibitions centred around the great bardfield group of artists. Lovely staff, and it's at the entrance to a really charming park. BEWARE closed on Wednesdays!

What a wonderful place. Fans of Edward Bawden should make this a place of pilgrimage as not only can you see a superb collection of his paintings, prints and designs but you can also view his sketch books, film posters and his personal effects such as his palette and paints as he left them.
Once you've had your fill a walk in the quite frankly magnificent gardens will end your visit on a beautifully fragrant note as the scent of roses fills the air.
Saffron Walden is a really pleasant town and if you're fortunate enough to visit in hot sunny weather (as we were) then a day out at the Fry and

This gallery is a gem. Anyone who is interested in Bawden and Ravilious and the artists who were based for a time in and around Great Bardfield from the '30s will find here a splendid array of their works.
There is not space available to show all of the collection at one time, so the gallery holds a series of exhibitions which highlight the artists individually or in context. Importantly also, the gallery holds a collection of the works of these artists' wives (eg Duffy Ayres, Tirzah Garfield) all of whom are becoming more recognised.
So well worth a visit.

Small gallery with very knowledgeable staff celebrating work of local artists of considerable note. Has added advantage of being in pretty market town of Saffron Walden.

Small art gallery focusing on local artists. Until October they have an exhibition of Edward Bawden - lithographs and paintings. Art is a matter of personal taste, of course, but I loved it

A jewel of a place tucked away in Saffron Walden. If you have any interest at all in Edward Bawden, Eric Ravillious or any other the Great Bardfield artists (or indeed mid century British art or illustration), it is a must visit.
