ACT Now Hydrotherapy
Canine hydrotherapy is a great way to exercise your dog's muscles without putting too much weight on their joints. It is significantly important to strengthen muscles before an operation to prevent problems occurring after. A conditions effecting the nerves and joints, just as common and painful in dogs as in humans.

Our team specialise in treating both short and long term spinal injuries, causing pain and difficulty in movement. ACT Now! in Newbury is located inside Falkland Veterinary Surgery on Newtown Road, Newbury and offers a wide range of services.
Services
Aquatic treadmill hydrotherapy is the perfect way to exercise muscles as it quickly builds muscle through the resistance of the water but has the benefit of partial weight bearing on the joints due to the buoyancy provided by the water. As the dogs' body is supported by the water the normal stresses placed on bones, tendons and joints is greatly reduced therefore preventing further damage occurring to the already damaged or weakened area.
Osteoarthritis presents itself with limping due to joint pain. The dog will shows signs of joint stiffness, struggling to get up especially after a long period of rest, impaired mobility due to the cartilage being gradually worn away. Through palpation of the joint you may feel swelling and inflammation.
The hip joins the hind leg to the body and is a ball and socket joint with the Femeral Head located at the top of the Femur fitting into the Acetabulum located in the Pelvis. In a healthy Hip the Femeral Head rotates smoothly within the socket and the bones should through their shape fit perfectly with no rubbing or friction.
CDRM is a degenerative disorder of the spinal cord between the Thoracic vertebrae's and the Lumbar vertebrae's. The presenting conditions may start with hind weakness in one pelvic limb which gradually progress resulting in the hind leg being dragged. The dog will have no proprioception and nail scuffing will occur as a result.
The sensory receptors in muscles, tendons and joints carry impulses towards the central nervous system (CNS). These are called Proprioceptors. The CNS receives simuli through the environment and the skin and from this information regulates the function of the body and controls the skeletal muscles.

I cannot recommend Michelle and her amazing team enough.
My 17 year old JRT rescue, JR, started coming for hydrotherapy sessions in September to maintain his mobility as much as possible. Sadly, it was not… meant to last long as he deteriorated due to an ongoing liver issue and died last week.
Whilst he only had three sessions, the ladies proved themselves to be truly genuine dog lovers as well as caring professionals. When I told them JR had been diagnosed with a terminal liver issue, I could see that Michelle and Charlie were choked because I was utterly bereft. Charlie jumped into action

We have been going here nearly a year now with my elderly dog. The employees are always proactive with spotting any changes in the animals or adjusting their excercies to benefit the dogs health and wellbeing. They are also caring and loving to the animals, making them feel confortable and making it as much stress free for them as possible.

After being recommended by our Vet to ACT (South) Ltd., I cannot praise this company enough for the care and compassion they have show towards my dog, they are all extremely attentive and patient with Bertie and have been more than helpful with tips and advice to overcome his idiosyncratic eating problems aswell. Bertie has improved incredibly well over the period and, on the whole, is now able to enjoy his walks with his usual enthusiasm. A big thank to you all for your much appreciated help.

Kaiser my 5 year old border collie developed a pronounced limp overnight. After weeks of trying different medication and injections Kai was still having days where he struggled to walk. Our vet Peter suggested a referral to aquatic canine therapy which is based at our vets surgery. Kai came for weekly sessions and was also referred to a specialist… and given You move tablets to take. Few days before we were due to go to the specialist Kai suddenly stopped limping. Took him to the specialist to be told whatever had been going on was better. Not sure exactly what was wrong but Kai loved his

Jef loves coming to hydro. Amazing staff who are very friendly and definitely all about your dog, they take the time to get to know each dog and owner and try and make the experience easy for both. You can ask as many questions as you need and are never felt as if you are being an inconvenience. I couldn't recommend them highly enough for either fitness or recovery.

My other halfs working dog unfortunately broke his right fore carpal early last year. He has been undergoing intensive rehabilitation for the past 10 months and hydrotherapy treadmill has been an integral part of his recovery. Not so keen at first Michelle and Lois' kindness and a cheese snack helped him relax and enjoy his sessions. Although… Kaiser will not work again he is a different dog to the one who came home from the vets a year ago, he's happy, healthy, comfortable and ready to enjoy a well earned retirement with his family . We've got our boy back and we couldn't be happier. Thank
