As the region's largest independent funeral directors, with three locations across Dundee and premises in St Andrews, we have cared for families since 1910. We prioritise your needs to provide a truly personal service. We care for your family and we never make assumptions. As in life, we know that every person deserves an exceptional level of service that is unique to them in death.
We spend time finding out more about your loved one to provide the best possible final send off, for them and for you. If you obtain a written quotation offering comparable service and facilities from a local funeral director we will beat it. Our prices start from 949 for direct cremation at Dundee Crematorium (including cremation fee of 499).

Services
Your dedicated Funeral Director will meet with you at your home, or at one of our premises. Your Funeral Director will listen to what type of service you would like and discuss the available options. Your Funeral Director will coordinate all of your requirements including newspaper intimation, flowers and refreshments to deliver a truly personal service for your loved one.
The first step when arranging a funeral is to decide whether the funeral will be burial or cremation. You may already know what your loved one's wishes are and the following gives more guidance on available options.
Should your chosen funeral be burial, an option exists to purchase new ground in Birkhill or Pitkerro Grove cemeteries in Dundee and the Western Cemetery in St Andrews, as an alternative to ground in a cemetery that may already be owned by the family.Existing cemetery ground may be in Barnhill, Birkhill, Balgay, Western, Eastern and Pitkerro Grove in Dundee and Eastern and Western in St Andrews.

When someone passes away in Scotland, their death must be registered within eight days unless the Procurator Fiscal's involvement prevents this. At the time of making the funeral arrangements we will give you detailed advice on registering your loved one's death. To register a death, you will be required to provide a death certificate, birth certificate and a marriage certificate, if relevant.
We take great care in the preparation and care of your loved one. We treat your family like our own, and from the moment your loved one is brought into our care we promise to provide a continuity of care that gives you peace of mind. To help us provide a truly personal service to your loved one a recent photograph to assist us is always appreciated, likewise bringing in personal effects, such as glasses, can make an important difference.
We can assist with making all necessary telephone calls and can contact the appropriate Minister, Priest, Humanist or Celebrant. If there is no church connection we can advise on the local parish minister or priest appropriate to the area where your loved one lived. To ensure a personalised service, your Officiant will want to find out more about your loved one.

From the very first contact my family and I were treated with dignity and respect in what was, and is, an extremely difficult time. Chris kept us in the loop at every step and went above and beyond to ensure the funeral arrangements went smoothly, which lifted a huge weight off of our shoulders. Extremely professional but with that personal touch. We would highly recommend Chris and the whole team at James Ashton and Son, they were first class.

My mum passed away last month and I was at a loss as who to choose so I googled, found James Ashton and Son and have not regretted it.
At such a distressing time, nothing was too much for Jamie. He was courteous and polite. He guided me through each step and approached everything with complete professionalism. Communication was either through phone or email and Jamie was very prompt in returning my calls.
I knew I wanted a humanist service for my mum and Jamie recommended a lovely lady called Fiona. She conducted a beautiful service , everything went smoothly.and I don’t think there was a dry

Can't be more grateful for the help, support professionalism and also being able to have a laugh with the staff at James Ashton & Son. A big thanks to James who from the first phone call to the end of the funeral couldn't have been any more helpful nothing was a trouble for my aunts funeral. James and all the staff made a hard time a little bit easier and we will always be grateful!

Would recommend ashtons to everyone
After my uncle’s sudden death I had to arrange his funeral.
A hundred thousand million thank yous to Jaime Anderson who basically held my hand (not literally) and walked me through the whole process from start to finish and made me feel as at ease as much as he possibly could giving the circumstances. Very compassionate and professional
