We are delighted that you are interested in starting a yoga practice and are here to support your journey. If you are looking for a 'general' yoga class to improve your flexibility and strength and quieten your busy mind with some meditation and breath work you may prefer to start with our hatha classes.
Yoga is an ancient practise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. The origins of yoga date back five thousand years to the Indus valley in Northern India. The word yoga means to 'yoke' or to unite' to create a union between body and mind. Yoga is most commonly understood as the practice of postures 'asanas'.
Astanga yoga is a dynamic form of yoga which follows a set sequence of postures 'asanas.' Movement is combined with the breath generating heat and stilling the mind to bring focus, flexibility and stamina. There are great benefits to be achieved from this practice and with perseverance one can achieve changes both physically and emotionally.
The word hatha represents the symbolic union between the sun (ha) and the moon (tha) and the balance between male and female, night and day, hard and soft. The practice of yoga has evolved over thousands of years. Many branches of yoga have developed to suit different human experiences and temperaments, although they are all bound together by a common aim, to bring peace and stillness to the mind through a balanced and healthy body.

Kindness and gratitude 🙏 - I’ve been practicing with Sarah, and Kate(s) for the last 6 years. They are just incredible ! So dedicated, and their passion for people and yoga is just absolutely amazing. Without them, I don’t know how I would have gone through those years ... They have varied classes and they often organise workshops with highly talented yoga teachers. I would highly recommend the Yoga Hutch !

I have been practising with the Yoga Hutch teachers for just over a year now. Age 70,, overweight and under exercised, maybe an Astanga Beginners’ class wasn’t the best start for me, but thanks to the kindness and skill of Kate W I learned a lot there and found my home in the Hatha , Yin and Slow Flow classes.
Even though at the moment most of the classes are on Zoom, the Yoga Hutch still feels like a community of friends, and the monthly Retreats at Home? -They are really special.

Sarah is an incredible yoga teacher and The Yoga Hutch is a wonderful studio. Sarah helped me regain flexibility when I could barely move after an accident many years ago and is now helping me deepen and broaden my practice, having taken me from gentler hatha into energetic ashtanga and now mysore self-practice. She is inspiring, kind, encouraging and really inclusive. Surbiton's yoga community is very lucky to have her!

Sarah is the most attentive, lovely, dynamic ashtanga teacher I have met in my twenty year yoga experience. Every class she takes you to your full potential with each pose, making the most effective verbal and hands on adjustments. A very nurturing yoga experience. I highly recommend Sarah, and what's best is you don't have too travel into central London for a top notch teacher!!

Dynamic and vibrant Astanga Yoga Studio and community in a peaceful location in Surbiton. Mostly led classes with a Mysore Self Practise class on Saturday mornings. Great for beginners and for students moving towards a traditional Mysore Style practise. My practise has deepened and developed under Sarah's guidance, encouragement and her ability to connect with her students.
