Our intent is that our teaching of History will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain and of the wider world. Using stories in History sessions can convey the culture, history, and values that unite people. They build familiarity and allow the listener to enter that period of time, making them more open to learning.
Good stories can convey tricky ideas in graspable ways for young children. Also, stories are far more engaging than a list of facts or a discussion of themes that can be too abstract for young children. Stories also help with learning because they're easy to remember! Besides the role that stories play in learning about history, they also inspire a love of reading by opening the children up to a whole new world.

At Holmwood School and Nursery we educate children aged 3-7 years. We have high expectations in all areas, whilst ensuring your child feels safe and finds learning fun and rewarding. We believe children have to feel secure and happy in order to learn and meet their potential. Pupils at Holmwood are inspired to learn, be resilient, and actually thrive on being set challenging tasks.
At Holmwood School and Nursery, we are proud to be part of the Inspiring Futures through Learning (IFtL) family of schools. At Inspiring Futures through Learning (IFtL) Multi-Academy Trust, we are committed to developing a family of schools who inspire all of our futures through learning. Schools within our Trust share the same values and ethos; our teams are constantly in the pursuit of development and excellence every day.
Holmwood School and Nursery actively promotes a warm, caring community where everyone is valued and recognised and the welfare and well-being of the children is paramount. We foster the qualities of truth, tolerance, freedom and peace and encourage sound relationships founded on respect and courtesy for one another.
Each half term we focus on a particular 'School Value'. Each time an adult sees a child keeping the School Value the child is allowed to put a special jewel in the jar. Our school values link with the British Values, which the children learn about regularly in assemblies and in the classroom, as well as the ethos of the school.
It is with great excitement that we would like to introduce our IFtL 'Childhood Pledge'. We pledge to all our children that we will provide specific memorable experiences and opportunities throughout their time at school that allows them to grow into well rounded citizens who can succeed as individuals and contribute to their society.

My daughter started at Holmwood partway through year 1 and we were delighted how quickly she settled in. I was nervous about moving her to a new school but it was definitely the right decision. She is very happy and we have been impressed how well she has progressed. In September she will move up to Two Mile Ash School having made a fantastic group of friends. Highly recommend.

Both my children attend Holmwood school and absolutely love it. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and will always do everything they can to fulfil the needs of the children. It is a very family orientated school with passionate staff. I couldn’t ask for anything more to start my children’s journey in education.
