At Sew School you can learn how to use a sewing machine in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Sewing machines are provided though you can bring your own if you like. Classes are small to ensure you get all the individual attention you need. It is very important to me that no one feels rushed or unable to ask a question.
After attending a Sew School course, I want all my students to feel confident and excited about getting started on a project. Sew School allows me the greatest pleasure of teaching part-time, alongside my 'costume' work and family commitments. It is a small and friendly affair, run from my home in High Barnet.

The Sew Basic course is not just for complete beginners, but also for those wanting to refresh their knowledge or for someone looking to improve their technique. On the Sew Basic course we learn all the essential techniques needed to make simple items in a way that is inspiring and fun.
Rather than making something specific, the emphasis is on really understanding the techniques and how to use a sewing machine so that you will feel confident to have a go at a variety of things once the course is finished. There are five classes in total, and each one lasts two and a half hours. You will get to know your machine and learn all the basic techniques needed to create simple items.

Due to its popularity you may have to wait a while to get a place in Sew Club. Even though I have several groups, it's not often someone leaves and a place becomes available. Some of my very first students still attend Sew Club! Because I would like to be able to offer my SEW BASIC students the possibility of joining a regular group, it is now only possible to join Sew Club if you have done a Basic Course.
One-to-one sewing lessons are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays (usually just in the afternoon), and very occasional weekends. These lessons are great if you want to learn something specific, or if you can't attend any of my group classes. It is the only option I can offer for children under 13 years old.
Since my return to the film industry, I'm very busy during the week creating costumes, as well as running my adult classes. Because of this I'm no longer able to put on classes for younger children at the weekend. I really didn't want to give this up but I need some time off!
If you have a younger child who is desperate to learn, then there is the possibility of ONE-TO-ONE LESSONS straight after school, or during the school holidays, on a Weds, Thursday or Friday. The cost is 40 per hour. I will continue to run my regular teenager group every other Saturday, and when I'm around during the school holidays I will organise a Teenage Sew Day.

Over the years I've made curtains, done alterations and run up fancy dress creations for my daughter - but always tentatively. Borrowing my mother's sewing machine, I always felt I would lose control, but thanks to Helen Mackenzie and Sew School I've been able to finesse these skills and even now have a machine of my own.
