At Flint Owl we love bread. More to the point we love organic, long fermented breads made from the finest flours, water and sea salt and that's it. No chemical additives, improvers or fats get anywhere near our doughs. Our breads, croissants and pastries are all handcrafted from scratch and baked in small batch sizes using ingredients that are organic and of only the highest quality.
At Flint Owl we don't believe in cutting corners for the sake of production which we feel translates into breads that are both delicious and wholesome, and also uniquely characterful. Once baked each morning, our breads and pastries are delivered fresh from our ovens to our very own Flint Owl cafes in Lewes and East Grinstead where the full range of breads, pastries, cakes and lunch items can be enjoyed over a cup of tea or speciality coffee.

I’m a big fan of Flint Owl bread. It’s of the highest quality and probably the best bread you can get in the area. Their croissant and pain au chocolat is excellent as well. I was excited when they opened a location in Brighton. However I’m taking a star off my rating because the toilets in the cafe are not well kept. They’re clearly not checked regularly and last time I visited there was no soap. How do the staff wash their hands, never mind the customers? Disappointing to see this at anytime, and especially during Covid. Please correct this Flint Owl and keep on baking.

Absolutely loved Flint owl in Lewes. So it was exciting to see you opening one in Brighton. But very different experience. Been twice now, once on my own and another with a friend and on both occasions its been rather messy, with multiple tables left with previous customers food plates and cups on and staff just walking past. Customer were moving plates to other tables so they could sit down. And they weren't very busy at all. Coffee was ok but sadly in no rush to head back.

Excellent coffee, original sandwiches, quiches and salads, the pricing is a bit uneven, but happy to pay more for really good food. The cakes are excellent, not the usual commercially produced fodder you find in so many of the Lanes cafes. Lovely staff too, and nice light airy room with tables spaced apart to give plenty of room.

Coffee quality has dropped precipitously in the past year or so. The bakery is great and the cakes still good but the quality of the coffees is generally poor and very bland. The flat white and cappuccino are not recommended. Flint Owl used to be the best place for coffee in Lewes, now there are other much better places.

I stopped off here for bread on the way down Lewes high street. The lady who served me was delightful and the aubergine salad next to her looked delicious. I mean as did everything, including the guy behind the counter, but really I wanted to buy everything.
At home I was so impressed I had to post a 5 star review. Their bread tastes wonderful and is so flavourful.
I already have a warm summer's day plan in mind revolving around buying a picnic worth of food from Flint Owl Bakery and sprawling over the race course. Perfect.

I almost hate to put this out there and spoil a good thing... Flint Owl Bakery is the lair of Vincent Talleu, youtube bread baking phenom. I'm guessing he's sleeping whenever you're awake, and vice versa, so you'll never see him, but check out his youtube vids on bread (and other subjects) and you will understand why you are eating the best bread of your life.

I first tried Flint Owl Bakery bread in Farm Cafe in Brighton. For me, it was the perfect bread, so when I found out that they had opened a shop in Lewes I couldn't wait to visit.
Flint Owl Bakery is based in Glynde in East Sussex. Here, they produce all their bread by hand, using little or no yeast, no preservatives or additives of any kind, and using very traditional processes.
They specialise in sourdoughs but also do bloomers, wholemeal and granary loafs, and seasonal loafs depending on the time of year. As well as bread, they do a number of cakes and buns, and actually have a coffee
