Senhouse Roman Museum
We will continue to monitor and limit numbers in the building to ensure the museum does not become too crowded. Visitors can continue to pre-book a timeslot for their visit (see 'Visiting' page). Tickets will also be available to buy at the door, but may be limited.

Dramatically sited on cliffs overlooking the Solway Firth, this award winning museum is next to a Roman fort probably founded in the first century AD and rebuilt during the reign of the emperor Hadrian. Most of the objects in the Museum derive from the fort at Maryport and the Roman civil settlement attached to it.

A tiny but great museum housing the largest collection of Roman altars found in a single excavation. Friendly staff and magnificent seaviews from the wooden milecastle.

Great access for my grandma and her trolly. A great little trail for the kids to do for them to learn lots too.
A fabulous views over the coast too. Highly recommend a trip when your visiting Maryport.

Fab collection of Roman pieces. A cute sheet for kids to do around the place and the staff are all very friendly.
The carpark is extremely small so be prepared to park somewhere else.
A gorgeous view of the sea from the place.

Nice little museum, well worth the visit. If you’re a big fan of Roman history, you’ll definitely like the place with lots of information available. It was pretty quiet when we went there so we were able to really take our time in looking at the artifacts and reading the information they had. The view outside the museum is also very lovely.

Not well signposted from main road so sat nav essential to find this little gem next to an outline of the fort. Lots of interesting altars plus other artifacts. None of the video screenings have captions for deaf visitors and others with language barriers, though we paid full entry fee. Equality Act compliance? Reconstructed watchtower gives good views all around.

Small carpark before you enter the museum and there is a charge of £4 each to look around, only 2 rooms which have more historic information on the walls than of the artifacts, there were a lot of the tomb stones that were unearthed that fill up the 1st room with the odd mannequins and some TV screens that give a video loop of spoken history and 1 TV that you can press different buttons to watch individual recordings.
There are toilets in between the 2 rooms and the entrance has items that can purchase as souvenirs.
It's ok if you want to learn some history about what was found and how life

This is a small Roman museum located next to the foundations of an old Roman fort. The exhibits cover all of the artifacts they have dug up from the site of the fort and the adjoining township.
Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area and are interested in Roman history.

A nice small museum with a crafts room that 2 lovely ladies were in making shields and digging for fossils with the kids, that my two loved.
The only negative thing in there was the mood and attitude of the gentleman at the tills, sat in the main entrance with the museum's merchandise.
