Services
Our Arts and Museums Service is continuing to take a cautious approach to ensure the safety of our visitors and staff members. Some venues are still operating a booking system and our smallest venues and areas, including the Camera Obscura and the Castle of St John, will need to remain closed until we feel it is safe enough to re-open them.
Scientific analysis of fabrics and stains alongside detailed research has uncovered fascinating facts about items in the museum's collection. For six years Dumfries Museum has been working in partnership with the University of Glasgow Centre for Textile Conservation. This exhibition features items conserved by students and the stories they have uncovered.
We aim to provide an enjoyable way for people to discover more about our local heritage from the collections we hold. Permanent displays, temporary exhibitions, specialist talks, school visits, family activities and tailored group visits offer different ways to learn from our collections. We welcome enquiries from community groups who wish to visit our venues or work in partnership with us on art and heritage projects.
We aim to encourage, develop and support volunteer involvement in our activities. The roles of volunteers and paid staff are complementary and mutually supportive. The enthusiasm and commitment of volunteers greatly enhances our ability to care for our collections and make them accessible to the public.
