Christchurch & Burton Karate Club
The two 4th Dan instructors, Sensei Debby and Sensei Paul, have over 40 years of Goju Ryu Karate training between them. They can also lay claim to success at national and international competitions. This level of experience and their commitment to training to a high standard has led to the club gaining a justified reputation as a friendly martial arts centre of excellence for Goju Ryu Karate.

A place where the whole family can train in safety and with confidence. The Christchurch and Burton club has been running since 1993 and over the years many of our students have gone on to reach black belt and compete themselves. With separate classes for both children (Wed 6:30-8:00pm) and adults (Wed 8:00-10:00pm), we welcome students of all levels - from complete beginners upwards.

I started training in 1982. My brother did it so I thought I'd give it a go and here I am still doing it - but maybe not so intense. I think age has something to do with it, and maybe three children doesn't help either. But at least I can take out all my motherly aggression by training the students harder!
There is no initial joining fee and you can train in the first month free of charge on a trial basis. We are a fully-insured and registered member of the English Goju Ryu Karate Association (EGKA), which ensures students will receive a very high standard of teaching. Burton Dojo students must maintain their EGKA membership in order grade and benefit from the personal insurance cover EGKA membership infers.
A frequent concern for beginners is will they be fit enough to attend and live through a session? The answer is not to worry about it - every black belt struggled through their first training session just like you will - it is all part of the learning process. The first thing to note is you will never be asked to do more than you feel you are capable of.
The earlier you start at any sporting discipline the more likely it is you will succeed at attaining a high level of skill. Goju Ryu Karate is no different and most of our competition successes have been won by students that started in their early years.

Parents are often concerned about the issue of training youngsters in a martial art that obviously can be turned to naked aggression and bullying outside the discipline of the club's training environment. In all our years of training we have only had to ask one set of parents to withdraw their child for unacceptable behaviour.
