Abbey Cottage Tearoom
Abbey Cottage Tearoom, Cafe and Gift Shop is situated in the picturesque village of New Abbey, Dumfries. Here at Abbey Cottage Tearoom, we've been making homemade soups and snacks, baking scones and cakes and serving speciality teas and coffees for almost 40 years! The combination of our great home baking and fabulous location next to Sweetheart Abbey make us a popular place for Afternoon Tea.

Whether you want to sit indoors or outdoors, we'll take your order and bring everything to the table for you. From personal experience, we understand vegan, coeliac and other special diets, food allergies and intolerances. Just be sure to ask! Our patio garden overlooks Sweetheart Abbey and dogs have always been very welcome.
Services
The preserves, teas, and coffees that we serve every day at Abbey Cottage can be purchased in our gift shop. There's also locally produced organic honey, mustard, chutneys and oatcakes. Depending on availability we also sell baking fresh from our kitchen. Why not ask us to make up a box of cakes to take home?
Afternoon Tea is served all day, every day. No restrictions. To make the whole outing more special, we do recommend that you contact us in advance and we'll reserve a table. Do you have any questions? Please do get in touch and have a chat with us. We can help answer any questions that you might have about special diets and we can help you with arrangements for birthday celebrations.

While visiting friends in Dumfries we came across this lovely cafe. It wasn't busy when we arrived. Lovely staff and service. Our food was really nice. Only had haggis a couple of times and the Haggis panini was lovely. Would visit again next time we are in the area.

Wow!! What can i say? So good we were here early morning for another Afternoon Cream Tea! Fantastic happy helpful staff only made this fabulous Cream Tea even better. With a belly that was built on Scones and Cakes, I can honestly say this is the best ever. Every ingredient is of an excellent quality. Their grannies would be proud of their baking prowess. Thank you.

Visited following friends recommendation, was not disappointed. Nice food good prices, slightly limited menu but I think this was down to the covid situation. Sat at outside table with a great view if the Abbey (pity about the scaffolding) lovely staff and dog friendly. Will be back.

Lovely wee place, fantastic cake options for a dairy free/vegan diet. A full allergy/dietary requirements menu was given to me when I explained we had a dairy allergy. I had a delicious dairy free lemon sponge, which was so good I ordered a slice to takeaway too! Great coffee as well, with oat milk option. Lovely location, overlooking the Abbey from the outside tables. Highchair provided for our wee boy. All in all, an absolute delight. We will be back!

Had coffee and scones with my sister and husband in lovely tearoom. It used to be our great grandmother's cottage and our Dad would go there for his summer holidays. She was curator at the Abbey and her gravestone is in the cemetery. A really special visit for us both and one which I would recommend to anyone interested in history and yummy food!

Great tea room serving afternoon teas, light lunches and excellent cakes. We stopped off here on the way to Dumfries. Everything we ordered was delicious and arrived quickly. The staff were very friendly and efficient. At the front of the tearooms is a little shop where you can buy books about the local area, sweets made down the road in Dalbeattie, tea and all kinds of little bits. We found the food to be very good value for money as well. Recommend a visit here as you can visit the rings of the Abbey right next door.

We stumbled across this lovely place the day after our wedding in July 2017. Best scones I've ever tasted! Best cream I've ever tasted, best butter and jam I've ever tasted too! Darn good coffee as well. 😁
I remember that it was so nice to sit outside and enjoy our food tea and coffee. Beautiful surroundings and the old Sweetheart Abbey is quite impressive. We have a bit of a drive from South Ayrshire but we can't wait to come back here.
I'm already checking my calendar as I see you're opening on the 16th of February? 😃
● UPDATE: September 2020. I was wondering if the tearoom would reopen
