Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition of the joints most commonly affecting the lower back, neck, hips, knees, feet and fingers. The protective cartilage overlying the ends of the bones within the joint thins and breaks down, leading to a disruption of the smooth functioning of the joint.
You may find that you feel stiff, especially in the mornings and after rest, and everyday activities that you normally carry out with ease, such as walking, climbing stairs and bending, are painful and limited. We passionately believe that no one should have their aches and pains dismissed as simply a sign of getting older.

Back pain is a very common condition - it is estimated that 80% of the population will suffer from back pain at some stage in their life. Back pain can be caused by a strain to the various supporting structures in the back: the joints, muscles, ligaments and discs. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommend osteopathy as a manual medicine for the treatment of persistent or recurrent low back pain.
Neck pain is a very common condition and may be caused by sleeping in an awkward position, by prolonged periods sitting at a computer or behind the wheel, poor posture or by awkward movements that strain the neck. Many headaches are also caused by a problem with the joints of the neck and stiffness in the muscles that run up that back and shoulders to the neck.
Hip pain may be caused by muscle imbalances or tensions around the hip, specific injury or by referral from the lower back or pelvis. The knee is a large weight bearing joint and given the forces that go through it as we walk and run and exercise it is no wonder it is frequently injured.
There may be poor alignment of the knee in relation to altered mechanics of the foot, hip and back joints and this may give rise to pain, swelling, locking and stiffness.Along with the hip, it is commonly affected by osteoarthritis. The foot and ankle form the foundation for the body.

Headaches are commonly caused by tension and restrictions in the neck, upper back and shoulders. The nerves supplying the back, top and front of the head exit through the joints at the top of the neck and can be irritated by these tensions leading to headaches. Migraines are not necessarily musculoskeletal in origin though over time the structures in the neck and upper back may become affected and sensitised and osteopathy can help here too.
