Even at temperatures of -15c air contains heat. Air source heat pumps work by extracting this heat and using it to provide heating and domestic hot water. The extraction of the heat takes some energy, however a high efficiency heat pump will provide around 4x more heat than using the electricity as a direct heat source making them an excellent alternative to traditional boilers.
