Services
The cafe is always evolving and as new and long-term ideas come to fruition, we continue to be overwhelmed by the level of positivity and generosity from our customers, neighbours, friends and family. We are proud that our cafe meets the original aims and ethos of Wayne and Geraldine Hemingway's 'european' vision for the estate.
The Staiths Cafe is passionate about creativity and supporting local artists and designers. Enclosed is information on some of the work we have on display and for sale. Amanda McAllister is an artist/printmaker originally from Birmingham but moved to Sunderland in 1985. Amanda worked in the Printmaking department at Sunderland Polytechnic as well as lecturing and running the university gallery for a number of years.
The Staiths Cafe is located on the South bank of the River Tyne and set against the stunning backdrop of the historic Dunston Staiths structure, a scheduled monument and Grade II listed timber structure. Situated in the heart of an award winning development designed by Wayne Hemingway, the cafe faces onto the riverside and protected mud flats and bird habitat.

Arrived 11:45 but a nightmare to park so didn't get to door until 12:00. Told 15 minute wait but more like 25 minutes. When at front of queue invited to wait inside which was nice as it was cold and windy and my 84 year old mum was losing the will to live
A further 5 minutes inside then seated upstairs on 2 comfortable sofas. No real menu other than on board downstairs or via a q code scan on my mobile. Had to go back downstairs to order and queue again then queue again for drinks. ยฃ27 for eggs Benedict, toasted pannine and a massive Yorkshire salad plus tea, coffee and a coke. Once food ordered

Good place; food is tasty (good breakfast menu). Good views from upstairs sitting area.
The table was not cleaned for a while. Also the sitting arrangements was very tight. Difficult to move around.

Tiled floors and zinc staircase rails with safety cables and track lighting with high ceilings are a kind of post industrial loft like look. And unlike this review the place is not pretentious. Well staffed counter ordering and paying and orders bought to tables. Mix of arm chairs, sofas and straight backed table seating. Upstairs gallery area with good views. Large latte, flapjack and fruit scone with jam just over six quid. Fresh baked goods and hot dishes. Really popular, and deservedly so. Loved it. Splendid river walks, and views of the Staaiths are a bonus.

Feel so lucky to have this on our doorstep. Get our breakfast from here as a treat a few times a month and the burger night is amazing value for food that tastes so good! Staff are brilliant and I’ve lost count how many times people say “have you tried the staiths cafe?” When I mention I live in Gateshead. Keep up the great work.

Wonderful breakfast and a hot mug of tea. Set us up for our 300-mile drive south. Excellent - which is why it was busy. Get there early on a Sunday morning, if you want a table!

Great bistro style cafe on the banks of the Tyne. Excellent location with an excellent no fuss cafe serving varied food and decent coffee. Prices are around average for this type of cafe.
I rated this high when I first visited 2 years ago and it is good to see that it has weathered the pandemic and is still delivering a good cafe experience.

Decent breakfast and a beautiful location. Lovely inside with two floors, lots of fantastic local artwork on the walls and itโ€™s even pet friendly which is handy. Only downside is the parking, such a busy location itโ€™s a nightmare to park.

Such a cute cafe! It's so hidden and tucked away, such a cute location. Love all the decor inside. It's very busy during lunch so we were lucky to get a table. So many options for food and drink, they cater so much for veggies and vegans too so very impressive. HUGE selection of cakes and brownies and other sweet stuff so there is definitely something for everyone. The staff were all lovely too, will definitely be returning :)
