Over eighty-five years ago David Squire, Head Groundsman and gardener at the Police Orphanage in Twickenham, was made redundant. With a young family to support he set up his own business, and that business has grown into a thriving, family-owned garden centre group which now comprises 16 garden centres, and rose, herbaceous and bedding plant nurseries.
Today DJ's son Colin is Chairman Emeritus of the company and continuing the family tradition Sarah, Colin's daughter, is Chairman. When the company was founded in 1935 our main activities were landscaping small domestic gardens. During the 1939/45 war, all landscape activities ceased and the nurseries were turned over to vegetable production.

Services
D.J. Squire incorporated his landscaping and gardening business having been made redundant from the Police Orphanage in Twickenham. D.J. Squire built up the landscaping business and by the end of the 1950s had a full fleet of vans and a large team of skilled craftsmen. Colin Squire opened our first garden centre at Twickenham, which was one of only a handful across the country at the time.
Plant Advice - Our experienced and approachable horticultural plant experts are on hand to help you with gardening advice. Assembly Service - To save you time, we offer an assembly service on BBQ's and Garden Furniture. This is a chargeable service. In-store & online purchases - We offer a local delivery service within approximately 5-7 miles of our centres.
Colin is the son of our founder D.J Squire and grew up with the business. He formally joined the company in 1956 after his National Service. He trained in architecture at Kingston School of Art (now Kingston University) and in Landscape design at University College London. Colin designed many gardens in the Twickenham area in the 1950s and 1960s.
For over 85 years, Squire's has helped people grow beautiful gardens, and enjoy their leisure time. We're passionate about the good that domestic horticulture can bring to society but we also recognise our responsibility to improve our environmental footprint. A senior team, led by our Chairman Sarah Squire, meets every quarter to ensure we are continuously improving our environmental sustainability.
A charity we have worked with and supported for a number of years. Greenfingers builds magical gardens at hospices for children and their families to relax in and find peace and enjoyment, sometimes in the most difficult of circumstances. In the last few years, we have donated the proceeds of the government carrier bag tax to this worthy cause.

Came here with a Friend for lunch, food was delicious and cooked well, staff were good and looked after the customers. However items in the Garden centre were expensive and over priced, brought a few Photo Frames, which actually were wrong and the lady told me when I went and got Photos done by Max spielmann. Went and got a refund. Won't be buying here again.

I phoned Squires in Shepperton half an hour ago to ask for advice about a sick plant I got from them and was fortunate enough to speak to a lady called Sheila who gave me her patience time and the advice and reassurance I needed. Squires are consistently good but Sheila just kicked it up a notch. Thank you!

The Harrods of Garden Centres.
This is site where the chain was founded and still one of the best in the Group. Its very popular with a high turnover of plants so you rarely find anything pot bound. There is a reasonably good selection of plants though it does tend to sell out quickly of vegetable seedlings and the range of big shrubs is limited.
However, it can be a bit on the pricey side. The pricing seems geared to people only buying one plant. If you are buying a lot of shrubs I would recommend taking the trouble to visit Wyvale Garden Centre located nearby in Sion House, Isleworth (12

Squires are a very popular garden centre, which is busy all year round.
The high number of visitors means most of the stock is very fresh and not root bound. This makes a big difference as the quality is so much better and there plants tend to get off to a much better start once planted in the garden.
They also have properly trained staff on hand to give plant advise - which probably accounts for why they are so popular.
The downside is it's not the cheapest of garden centres - some of the bedding plants are almost double what you would pay in a DIY centre. Also the range of shrubs
