Top food off the beaten track in Grosmont! You'll find us along the path to the church, 125m from the crossing towards the Engine Sheds. Follow us on Instagram for a preview! We offer high quality, freshly ground, expertly made cups of coffee, from espressos to lattes and any variety in between; along with home baked cakes and pastries, breakfast items, light bites and lunches.
We serve wines by the glass or bottle, as well as a bottled Yorkshire bitter and a bottled lager. Enjoy browsing in the bookcase, or pick up today's papers and relax by the woodburner. We have free WiFi, and a flask filling service. Any of our teas and coffees are available to take away. Dogs are most welcome, inside or out, wet or dry.

Grosmont is a small village with a population of about 300 in the Esk Valley in North Yorkshire. It is on the Eastern side of the North York Moors National Park, six miles from the North Sea coast. From the South - take the A169 North from Pickering. Climb up to the moors and notice the Hole of Horcum on your left as the moorland begins.
We intend to display copies of the original plans for the school in the coffee shop. You can see them here. It seems that a school room 36 feet by 18 feet was a standard size in the 1840s when the first school was proposed and built. It's amazing to think that over a hundred children were taught in such a modest space.
As well as many interesting documents about the building plans for Grosmont School, we discovered microfilm of original records kept by three Schoolmasters in charge. Around the time of this third Master arriving, the addition of the larger school building (to be our home!) had been made. Revd J. Bailey was the vicar of St Matthew's Grosmont throughout this time and closely associated with the National School.
The first entries are by John Ellison. I've transcribed some of his statements, illustrating the strong relationship between the school, religious observance and agricultural work. The weather, of course, plays an important role; and there seems to be a refreshing tolerance and understanding about the hardships endured because of it.

Me and my girlfriend visited yesterday and while queuing I looked forward to see what cake's were available the male behind the counter said have I got a mask. I said no and before I could say anything else the male abruptly said get out then. We just left gobsmacked. There were other people without masks. I am actually exempt from wearing a mask but didn't get the chance to say anything about that. Also since restrictions were lifted I've never been challenged

On holiday in Grosmont and decided to try the wood fired pizzas for supper. Ordered a "Young Turk" , and a "Toasted and Roasted "
which were both delicious. Sat waiting with a glass of False Bay red wine, lovely views and lucky enough to spot a red deer too!!
Great service from staff and food excellent.
