Thin film intumescent coatings are manufactured from organic materials and are inert at low temperatures. They swell (or intumesce) to provide a charred layer of low conductivity foam when exposed to high temperatures. This char layer reduces the rate of temperature rise in the steel and prolongs the steels load bearing capacity.
Approved Document B, ASFP, FIRAS and LPCB recognise the importance of maintaining the Integrity ratings of Compartments and as such recommend works are duly completed by an accredited Contractor. All too often this element is undertaken by other trades, whom are not accredited and/or install materials that are not fit for purpose often resulting in Compartment breaches.
